New laptop not charging from docking stations via USB C port + external display not working either

I recently bought an Initia series laptop running Windows 10 64bit.

The first problem I ran into was that I couldn't get past the setup PIN screen on the initial configuration. I see from this forum that that is not an uncommon problem. In my case I ended up ringing tech support and ultimately reinstalling Windows, with their help. That resolved that issue.

The problem I have now though is that the USB C port will not charge the laptop via docking stations. I have tried two different types. In both cases the docking station is recognised and the external mouse and keyboard work, via the docking station. However my external monitor is not picked up and the laptop does not charge. I have a separate laptop that works fully with both docking stations.

I ordered a USB 3.2 PORT (Type C) port although I have noticed that it says 3.1 engraved on the chassis of the laptop. When I plug in the docking station a message pops up saying "Display Device may be limited" and something about ensuring that my Display Port is supported by my PC. When I click on that message it opens up the following link:

So it seems like there may be 2 separate issues here:

  1. The laptop is not charging via the USB-C port (either directly or via a docking station)
  2. The Display is not working via the docking station

Is there anything that I can do here? Is this likely to have happened because I had to reinstall Windows? I have installed all of the drivers that were supplied in my PC Specialist account page.

I chose USB 3.2 as I was under the impression that that would work with docking stations and would charge my laptop as well.

Can you post your full specs from the order page?

It has a couple of USB C ports, only one of which is USB C 3.2, so if you're using the USB C 3.1 port, it's not going to work?

Hi,

Here are the specs

There is only 1 type C port on the laptop so I'm inserting the cable into the correct one

Here is a picture of that port and the red arrow is pointed at the etching that says "3.1"

So there's no mention of power delivery on that USB C port, it would state PD if it had it, so it won't charger via it. USB C doesn't inherently mean it outputs power.

Similarly, it's just a standard data port I believe, doesn't carry video, otherwise it would state "DP over USB C"

It would also show on the icon on the laptop if it had power delivery or Display Port:

It's best to confirm this with PCS, there was a switchover with the USB naming convention, so sometimes it's incredibly difficult to know if they're pre switchover or after.

My guess is though that it's a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port which means USB C at 10GB/s just for data (this happens to align with being a 3.1 port before the switchover as per the stamping)

The port you're thinking of I think is Thunderbolt which uses the USB C connector but carries video by default and power delivery.

For the USB C port to do what you're expecting, it would need to be labelled as "USB C 3.2 Gen 2 PD DP over USB"
