The Defiance is 'overkill' for that, in that it's basically the same spec as an Optimus or a Recoil for the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage etc.

The price premium is for the gsync screen, which for occasional, casual gaming doesn't seem worth it versus what else one might do with a couple hundred quid.

Hmm ... I'm now torn between the Defiance V and Recoil II :p.

The Optimus has a nice saving, but I prefer what the Defiance and Recoil can offer.

I like the QHD screen option on the Defiance and the Narrow Bezel Design on the Recoil (plus savings - more so on the 15" version).

I'm slightly leaning towards the QHD screen for the extra detail / screen real estate for productivity though I agree I don't really need gsync.

I shall ponder over it a little more tomorrow and thanks for your feedback :).

Keep us posted :)

The Recoil is lighter than the Defiance, and a couple of centimetres smaller length + width.

Defiance 17"
Dimensions (w x d x h)418.5 mm x 287 mm x 24.9 mm
Weight3 kg

Recoil 17"
Dimensions (w x d x h)395.7 x 260.8 x 26.75mm
Weight 2.4kg

Some people have complained of thermal issues in the Defiance moreso than other chassis. Although the majority of systems are likely fine, and if you did have a Defiance with bad thermals you can always return it within the usual period for a refund.

Pixel density is a very subjective thing (some people like 1080p on 27" monitors for some reason...). A QHD panel on a 17" screen would be a similar density to the 1080p screen on my 13.3" laptop. Which I find to be okay, a bit borderline, and for comfortable reading I actually zoom the browsers 10% in. Though you may well have used QHD on 17.3" screens before and found it's great.

I have decided to go with the Defiance based upon a recent review in the forums :p. The QHD screen will be the highest resolution I've tried so looking forward to it :).
