What do you guys think about building a new PC with a placeholder GPU?

I need a machine for work/media as my laptop bit the dust. I’m looking at 3080TI or better GPU’s but prices are crazy right now.

The other option is to just buy a budget laptop and PS5. Wait 6-18 months to spec an all new gaming PC with a next-gen GPU.

If you don't mind eating the cost sure, just know it's going to cost you more in the long run. I believe the quadro cards are readily available and they are great for production/work flow side of things. Absolutely useless for gaming though but hey it's an option, not one I'd advise but it's an option

Another option, can you survive on the integrated GPU while you wait for a new pc with a 3080TI or save some more money to sort a machine a couple of months down the line, because to be honest i think a new machine is definitely the way you have to go

I had to make a similar choice myself recently as I was using a 3770k on an Intel Ivy bridge platform, do I just upgrade the GPU.... and decided it was time for an upgrade.

The difference in performance is night and day (check out my specs and photos on the new build section where I have just posted.

The wait was long but its worth the wait.

I had exactly the same dilemma as you do...upgrade GPU or just buy a new system. Everyone was telling me my CPU would be a bottleneck. I think the folks here are giving you the correct advise, its time to change the system, and not just the GPU.

I wish the best of luck..as its never a good time to purchase a new PC - convincing my Mrs was not easy!!!! Thankfully even she agreed that I was due an upgrade.

Boy, thanks god my girlfriend is a gamer she is fine with me buying 5750 euro PC and i am about to buy a PS5 as it appears a local shop got a stock and will be able to order in an hour

You could describe my Mrs as anything BUT a gamer!!!but even she knows that most people change their PC every two to three years....I had waited 7 years...even though it was a big spend item!!! I feel that if you spec with the right components and choose wisely, obtain advise from the community here in the forums...there is no reason why you your new build wont last just as long

anyway on the topic. I dont think the situation gonna improve anytime soon. The shortages are expected to last until end of 2021 even towards 2022. However 3080TI has half of the hash rate so it is not as lucrative for miners and it is quite expensive so might not be having so much orders.
Making an order on pc should not give you massive wait times like 3080 does. So it depends, can you do work on your current pc? Does your work require GPU at all? If not upgrading a whole PC and later getting GPU is a good option.
I would not buy a budget laptop and console honestly. Especially since PS5 is hard to get too and sold out almost everywhere and the budget laptop would need replacement in a year or two. Better invest into a good base PC that can be upgraded in future
