New Elimina 17" running very hot

Hi All,

Wanted to check peoples thoughts on my temps. This is a brand new just delivered Elimina 17". My GPU and CPU is running extremely hot to the point that it is throttling the CPU. I used HWinfo64 while playing 1 game of Fortnite and the temps of the package were rather concerning. Is it normal for gaming laptops to push temps this high?

This was using the performance preset and an aggressive custom fan profile that would be running the fans at 100%.

This seems pretty high, especially with 100% fan, and Fortnite not being that big-crunchy-number application for the CPU. Core 2 distance to Tjmax at 1° only is a bit concerning. What about those same parameters but with a less powerful profile?

If I were you I'd contact PCS and see if they suspect a bad thermal paste application from their own. Even because other Eliminas, you've seen, aren't acting so badly so it might be the only differentiating factor among the two.

OK so using the entertainment preset brings things much more under control, but some thermal throttling limits still get reached.

I'll give PCS a ring and see what they say.

Performance mode is ideal for short and heavy workload scenarios, like benchmarks and photo editing. But for gaming (especially now with Dynamic Boost 2), entertainment is preferable. I've read in a lot of places that the new 3000 GPUs are "expected" to run hot on laptops, so having the heatpipes shared with the CPU will make it run hotter as well.

But I still think yours is too hot to the point that it constantly throttles.

I do hope they learnt their lesson at proper repasting at this point. RMA deliveries back and forth at their expenses is slimming their margin a lot.
I was expecting they found anomalies during QC testing phase, but.. ok.

Interestingly, I did notice the testing phase against my order stated "testing - problem" at one point. So I do wonder if they had found some thermal issues. The same person did the QC as the testing, looking at my order history.

Just prepping the machine to send back to PCS and noticed the cores have spiked quite high even when under light load in windows (about 14% CPU utilization). So my hope is it is just a bad TIM application.

This is interesting I thought they were designed to run cooler than the last gen?

I think it's a bad lemon, not the Elimina laptops in general. The other one received in this forum seems to work flawlessly.

Not really, especially when they now allow an extra 15W with dynamic boost 2. So they know things will get hot, but designed them to run faster no matter what.

The CPU of YogiC is indeed running cooler than @Style evo , but her GPU is reaching 86° (and throttling) regardless of the better paste job.

Yeah, but you know the shared heat pipes. So I wouldn't blame the GPU if the CPU is going crazy hot. We'll see what ends up being after the RMA..

The CPU definitely shouldn't be reaching its thermal limit on games such as Fortnite. I had an issue a month ago when my own poor thermal paste application had the CPU temps idle around 55-60 and immediately went to 90-100 under load regardless of the game used. After applying Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut, cleaning out my laptop completely, and updating drivers etc. my CPU temps now idle around 30s-40s with the GPU idling around 30 degrees.

I agree with everyone else who suspects that it's LIKELY a case of poor thermal paste application. Hopefully PCSpecialist get back to you soon though!

I had the same issue when I had my laptop - the CPU (an i5-9300H) kept on thermal throttling (always above 90 degrees, even on easy games like minecraft). The issue with it was the thermal pasting, so I’m thinking that yours is the same issue. Better pasting/repasting your laptop should do the job and bring the CPU back down to normal temps

Thanks, reassuring to hear it is the TIM application that seems the most likely problem. I returned the laptop to PCS on Friday, which they should receive tomorrow, so hopefully will have it back fixed by the end of the week.

Be aware that RMAs can take up to a month at the moment.

Ouch! The tech I spoke to said it would be given a top priority - hopefully its not as long as a month with that!

Received my laptop back today, just 4 days after PCS received it so pretty good service I think. They confirmed the issue was a bad thermal paste application. They've repasted it and now temps are under control. They still get quite high - in the 80s - but level off before getting into the 90s even on performance mode.

In the 80's is exactly what you would expect so that's good.
Excellent turn around from PCS as well, its a shame it had to happen in the first place though.
