new 2018 Recoil II

Hi

I am on my second Optimus 15.6 laptop and it's getting closer to time for an upgrade but this time I might consider a different model.

I would like to know how easy is it to upgrade/change the RAM, HD, M.2 cards etc.

I would also like to know the chassis because PCSpecialist's own laptops don't often seem to get reviewed.

Does anyone own one yet?

Unlikely many peiople / anyone owns one yet. The chassis are so new I think PCS have ovly just had stock, or they may not even have it yet.

i.e. it doesn't seem to be a Clevo model. I had a look a Tongfang but couldn't work out if it was one of those either.

I expect changing the storage and RAM is simple, usually just a case of removing the back cover. But it's always possible it's a chassis with the RAM slots hidden under the keyboard.

I'd suggest calling PCS to ask.

Gotta say that the Recoil has definitely perked my interest. Love a good mechanical keyboard and I really do like the look of it. The reviews of the TongFang variants are encouraging as well :)

I've seen a few reviews for the chassis as well apart from people saying the keyboard is too "clicky" I've not seen a bad thing about it. Wish it would fit a 1070 in though. The access pics look great. Definitely geared towards m.2 which is still pricey but great performance. The HDD slot will definitely be taking an SSD instead for less heat weight.

Anyone know which make panel it is and its quality?

I read in another forum thread that it's the same panel as the old Gigabyte Aero - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Gigab...TX-1070-Max-Q-FHD-Laptop-Review.262370.0.html .

I'm definitely interested in this model, only there's rumours that a battery upgrade may be possible in future versions, or perhaps even as an upgrade to the existing model, so will wait a bit until i get confirmation. A Malaysian company called Illegear seem to be sharing more info about this than any other supplier. Worth keeping an eye on the Lowyat forum thread on the Onyx - the Malaysian version of the Recoil II (aka the TongFang GK5CN)

The screen is a Chi Mei N156HCA-EA1 – CMN15D7. The reviewer talks about the quality of the screen too.

I'd read that review from NBR. Glad the screen is of decent quality. Not concerned about the battery myself as it will be plugged in 90% of the time. Shame they couldn't squeeze a 1070mq in this machine. CPU seems a good performer and the overall quality of the build looks great. When mine arrives I'll be opening it to paste it myself other than that it'll just sit on a cooling pad at home and work

The CPU does look impressive. The only caveats seem to be battery life and heat/fan curves, but this just seems to be an issue across all the new slim n lights that have the 8750h in them. In fact I think that reviewer from technomadica said (on a forum post or something) that the Recoil runs cooler than the MSI and Gigabyte equivalents- I think Zephyrus is slightly cooler thanks to that fangled hinge design.

Just curious, I was going to order mine with that additional thermal paste added on (an extra 9 quid or something), i'm no expert on cooling parts so do you mean that PCS's thermal paste isn't that great? Or maybe it's just cheaper to DIY.

Just read from Illegear that they will offer a battery upgrade that will improve 30% but only for models with a 1050ti. Not sure if PCS will follow suit on this though...watch this space I guess.

Hmmm...that review has a video of the keyboard in use - as much as I like a mechanical keyboard, that one seems very overly clicky

I'm happy with the keyboard as I'm a fan of the style. The clicking won't be an issue for me. Yeah fan curves always seem to be an issue on my octane I used throttlestop wondering how much use it could be here? Yeah for its size and power and price it seems to have similar machines beaten. I'm excited to get mine and see what it's like first-hand. That review was great the pictures and video and detail really helped sell me on this machine

For £9 it's more than likely a much better quality paste. If you have the paste and confidence you'd probably be better doing it yourself but otherwise its a small amount for what could be a good difference in temperatures.

Had mine for 10 days now, and generally happy with it. Keyboard is clicky, as has been mentioned, but not the end of the world. Screen quality seems satisfactory, as does the chassis. I don't have any complaints yet.
