I am looking into a gaming laptop with rtx 2070. And I found two good options for my budget. There is this Asus strix G15 with i7 10750H and there is the pcspecialist Vyper III, that comes with i7 10875H, webcam and thunderbolt(Lacks on the Asus), both for the same sort of budget £1750. And I can not decide what to pick.

Can someone give Any advice?
Thanks for the attention!

We can only advise on PCS builds, but the Vyper is very good. Thunderbolt means you can add an eGPU so when the GPU is old, you can still game at full power.

Hi,
Thanks for the attention mate!
I was wondering, if the RTX 2070 super of the Vyper III 15.5", is the max-q or the max-p version, would you know that?

Thanks in advance!

No, otherwise it would state it as max-q. This is the full fat mobile 2070, which is an underclocked full fat desktop chip ;)

Thanks!
I have other question, although don't know if you can help me.
I am very keen to go for the Vyper III 15.6, but I'm wondering if the price of laptop and/or the components are going to vary in the next month? Like, I could wait a month or so, if the price is likely to go down.

Cheers,

Prices fluctuate all the time, anyone’s guess as to weather they’ll go up or down. With Covid, prices have already gone up a few hundred compared with early March.

Hello

I'm not sure on the rules about discussing other brands here but I have been looking at the same two laptops as you but in 17" version. The difficulty for me is that there are loads of reviews for the "big brand" Asus strix laptops but very little for this Vyper chassis, and the cooling is absolutely vital in a gaming laptop (especially since you can't undervolt the 10-series processors). One thing I would say is that if you go for the PCS build it might be worth contacting them to see if they can upgrade you to faster RAM (these processors can run with 2933MHz) and I read on another thread that it can be done even though it's not in the configurator. Also, the 10875H is a "better" chip but for gaming there's probably very little difference between it and the 10750H as far as I can see - in fact the latter clocks a little higher in theory.

I have a Rog STRIX at the moment and it is very good - the Vyper looks similar in build quality but it's really hard to know for sure with it being so new - no reviews anywhere! You will get slightly better value for money from PCS though as far as I can see, everything else being equal.

Hey Vin,
As you said, I was sort of facing the same confusion/indecision as you.
I am still not sure of I should go for a know brand with similar specs or get very high specs for the same price.
I gave up on the ASUS, because of the i7 10750H (slightly inferior but not a deal breaker) the lack of thunderbolt 3 and the webcam. Then O also have my doubts if the building quality of the ASUS is any good as it's sort of a "cheap" option for their high end laptops, and I have also seen some people complaining about their long life durability...
The Vyper III from PCS gives some advantages, as I am interested in having the laptop for at least 5 years (as my current Ideathink Lenovo), I am trying to fit as much high end specs as I can for the price, then I can give my laptop some lifespan.
Like, the Vyper III 15.6, gives me the thunderbolt 3, what gives me the chance of having a eGPU in maybe 2/3 years time, gives the webcam (at least a basic one to make video calls), the high i7 10875H and the RTX 2070 Super.
But I stick with what you said, I am also waiting to see some feedback on this Vyper about building quality and thermals...
And thanks about the tip for the RAM, I will email PCS and ask them if is there anyway of upgrading it for the 2933MHz...

Cheers,

The Vyper 15” with 2070 chassis model is TongFang GM5MP7.

For the 15” with 2070 Super it’s TongFang GM5MPHY

That’s what you need to search for reviews as the “Vyper” branding is specific to PCS.

I think Eluktronics MAX-15 use the same case and parts as Vyper III. Review -
I also thought that it could be the same chassis. Although it features the pass i7 generation. Thus, I am guessing that it could actually be the Vyper II.
So I wonder if the thermals will be any different if the Vyper III is sort of an upgraded chassi...

Cheers

Vyper 3 is completely different to the 2, much thinner and previous chassis was plastic.

If a 2070 can't run games at 1080p in three years time then most gamers the world over are screwed. The 2070 will be grand at 1080p for a lot longer than that.

I had a 680m in a 2012 laptop and it still gamed at 1080p eight years later until the laptop died earlier this year. A 2070 is approximately 48 thousand times more powerful than a 680m.

Well, in the presented chassis there is also the lack of tunderbolt 3, what does come in the Vyper III chassis, as confirmed by PCS.
So, I think the Vyper III chassi might be pretty similar with that one, but not exactly the same...

This whole thing with benchmarks and fps counting its quite crazy.
Because I have been looking at many of them to sort of help me decide what are the best options. Although I am never really sure. Like I thought that some laptops that I had seen for the same budget of the PCS budget (£1800) would actually be a better option as they have the last gen i7 paired with a RTX 2080 max-q would be actually a better option. Although I have seen benchmarks and fps counting lower on the 2080 max-q in comparison to the full laptop RTX 2070. Bit then in this video the 2080 max-q scores better then the 2070.
So, I just don't know...

Hi Delanno,

Just wondering, did you ask PCS about upgrading the RAM? What did they say?
Hey Briggm,
Happy to help;
I have asked them and even sent a specification of a RAM card that I had looked and thought about swapping. But then they replied with this
"
Reviewing the specification of the Motherboard, there is no guarantee that the 2933MHz RAM would work, we specify that it can support 2666MHz as advised by the Manufacturer.

You can look to source this RAM within the build, but it may only limit to 2666MHz. An overclock may give the full utilization of the RAM but we cannot confirm that as we do not provide support on manual overclocked systems. "

So, I really don't know if I will try to upgrade it, as there is no clear answer about it supporting the faster ram or not.
Unless someone does the swap and post it here, don't think I will do.
Cheers

Hmmm the manual of this Tongfang chassis states that it supports up to 2933MHz, so I would have thought that it'd be fine.

Yeah, that is true, but they stated that it is not clear. So, we might need to wait or see someone that has done the swap and it worked...
