Hi guys, i have a HDTV that i use for tv etc. but ive also been using it on my old desktop.

It claims to run full 1080p on tv, but when i choose resolution on my pc, it maxes out at 1360x768.

My 22" lcd does 1600x1200 which is actually higher.

My question is this : does the tv cap at that resolution because thats its capability or is it because my nvidia 8800gts 640mb doesnt do full 1080p?

if it is a case of being capped at 1360x768, will my gaming experience be improved my sticking to the 22"?

Thanks guys,
Customer eagerly awaiting his desktop :)

I had the 8800GTX and it ran 1080 on my TV, I was using a DVI - DVI cable though so I would say yes it is because of the VGA cable.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but here:

VGA - Video Graphics Adapter
DVI - Digital Video Interface

It's all in the name, Digital.. Go digital :)

Thanks guys :)

One last question, will my gtx 570 carry sound through my tv if I use a HDMI to DVI connector?

and will my PC come with a DVI slot?

again thanks for helping a noob out

The GTX 570 will have a HDMI and a DVI connection.

Going purely on assumption here, the HDMI on the 570 will only carry the video as there is no sound generated from the graphics card.
I have no idea if it is possible to run your soundcard through the graphics card to enable the HDMI to produce video and audio.

So I am going with my final answer.. The GTX570 will only carry a video signal down the HDMI.

On Radeon cards, you are able to pass sound straight from the graphics card as they have an onboard sound chip on them too ;) clever eh?

As that doesnt help you; on the Nvidia cards, I thought it couldnt either; but you can; but you have to get a little geeky....

There should be a spdif header on the motherboard, you need to connect this to the spdif in on the GFX card. Then you connect the GFX card to the lcdtv via HDMI, enable sound from the onboard soundcard to use spdif, and the graphics card to use HDMI, and in theory you are done.
Your biggest issue is going to be locating the spdif header on the motherboard, and finding a cable to connect it to the GFX card. In theory it's simple, but in practice it may not be.

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/441176-guide-8800gt-9800gt-9800gtx-sound-over.html#post5305349 This thread explains how to do it; basically it is transferring your motherboards onboard sound to the graphics card. :) Alternatively; fit a soundblaster card with an optical out and run that to a receiver or your tv if it has optical in.

Your PC may switch to NVidia's HD Audio output automatically when connected by HDMI - if it doesn't you just have to change the output device by right-clicking on the speaker icon next to the clock on the taskbar and selecting "Playback Device".

The most recent Nvidia cards (GTX4xx+) no longer have S/PDIF headers as the card can and will normally auto directs the sound through the HDMI once connected. I know mine does and its great.

As Pengipete says if it doesn't its just a click or two away.
