My Optimus 15" :(

Hello, below are the specs of the optimus laptop that I ordered as a gift for someone, however as the laptop did not arrive as early as I would have liked, the person for who the laptop was for went abroad for holiday. I didn't open the laptop thinking that I would wait for the person to return but then remembered that I should make sure that the laptop works fine so after about 5-6 days of having received the laptop I decided to turn it on.

My initial impression was that the laptop along with the power brick was too big and heavy and perhaps I should have ordered the Vortex instead... because despite the longer battery life on the optimus, it is not something that one can carry around all the time, and the mobility was the main reason I didn't go for the Vortex. Nonetheless, I ignored the size and turned the laptop on, downloaded a firewall, anti-malware programme, etc. I was hoping the laptop with the i7 processor, 8 GB ram and the hybrid hard-drive would be faster when turning on and browsing the net and watching youtube videos, but it was as fast as my cousins i5 hp laptop. It was somewhat alarming at how slow the laptop was when I was using google maps.

Since the laptop was for gaming I decided to install some mmorpg, however I was unable to download LOTRO and some other random games. Eventually managed to download wizards101. Although the game worked fine, which it would on most systems given its low system requirements, the laptop heated up quite quickly when playing the game, the fan noise was medium but again, I wouldn't expect it playing a game like wizards101.

The worst and main problem I have encountered over the last two days is the random shutting down of the laptop. Whilst I am playing the game the laptop automatically shuts down, it states windows updating and then shuts down. I figured it was normal at first but then when it happened again the subsequent day I figured it may be a problem.

I don't wanna make the laptop sound bad because it does have a good keyboard and an amazing screen. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the problems mentioned above are somehow my fault because I am not that technical when it comes to laptops.

Its already been 10 days since my order arrived even though its only been about 4-5 days since I started using the laptop. So returning it is not something I am able to do, I don't think, therefore I really hope I can get some advice on how to speed my laptop up as it should be fast, I know should be fast looking at the specs. Also how to stop the random shut downs.

If you can't give me advice in relation to the above then someone tell me whether or not I can return the laptop.

The shutdowns & slow performance are probably being caused by windows update,
to stop it from doing this change the settings.
Go to start/all programs/windows update/select "Change settings"
then select "download updates but let me choose whether to install them"
you can then choose when to install them yourself or they will install when you shut down the machine.
Dont know if its overheating or if it's normal, maybe someone with the same laptop could advise.

Disable windows updates, try your games again. This laptop should not be slow by any means!

Maybe your internet connection was having a slow down while using google maps. Is it slow for General Use?

If there is an obvious fault with it then it is covered under warranty.

i must be lucky with Win updates????my household runs 3 PC's and 3 laptops (XP.Vista/7) and i've never had an issue following Windows updates??

The only probs I've encountered were driver updates, but that is very rare,my HB amd/4gbram/integrated grx/'n' wireless for £300 at Amazon seems really fast....it may mean a fresh install for u m8(OS/Drivers)as that always sorts probs other than hardware
