Got my Octane IV Laptop delivered yesterday,

I stopped smoking recently and using the money to pay for this was a good incentive, so i was a little tense before it came and craving a bit, wondering what was gonna come out of the box, i was expecting a flimsy cheap looking and feeling chassis with a screen that would bend if closed with one hand.

Some people think they need fancy badges and lighting effects that certain (ahem) other brands are putting out the door, trust me, i have been fishing around checking out specs etc of other brands and they don't touch this when it comes to specs vs price....... and this out did them all, something had to be wrong here!........

I was wrong, its well built, solid feeling and doesn't bend like my last laptop, i had to test it to see if it had the goods under the bonnet so i set it up and ran some benchmarks........ all i can say is - Christ on a bike with a jetpack!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement with my ex drug habit!

Yeah i had to post the benchmarks because i had been looking around for some and there isn't any anywhere - even on US sites under the other Clevo ranges, probably because there arent many of these around yet with the 6 core i7 8700K - in Laptops anyway!

I hope it does help potential buyers because i can't say a bad thing about it so far unless sound is an issue to some people as the fans can be a little loud on full blast but descent headset sorts that, and you gotta expect a little fan noise with something this powerful and fast!

It did make me laugh though seeing it score so high on benchmarks designed for Desktop PC's

I haven't had alot of time to play with it so far - well, not as much as i'd like, but i've managed to install about 12 very demanding games like BF1, Crysis 3, GTA V, Dying Light etc, and they all look spectacular on it with 100+ fps on Ultra Settings

I've just got out to my rig for work the next 3 weeks but on my hours off i have a feeling i'm gonna be up pretty late

Congrats on kicking the habit and found a good incentive.

Hope you don't mind if I nick this for future use :)

Haha - No Probs bud! sometimes its the only way to describe something that fast that should come with a crash helmet and epilepsy warning!

Looks to be a great buy.
Almost exactly the spec I've recently saved, apart from 1060 rather than 1080.due to the heat generation.
I like the idea of all those ports to give some future proofing. My current laptop is over 6 and showing its age, though a fast processor and 2x USB 3 ports at the outset, with an SSD upgrade a couple of years ago, have helped extend it. . The latest version of Adobe lightroom doesn't work with the nvidia graphics card, hence the search for a replacement.
My 2005 pcspecialist desktop is still working but only acting as backup.

With regards to temps, they aren't too bad. My new Octane IV with an i7-8700K and the GTX1070 OC option and the highest temps i have seen so far are around 60c-65c for CPU (idle around 40) and 70c for the GPU. The fans only seem to ramp up to around 80% on automatic setting.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you ever find it running without the fans - eg when not gaming and just browsing? Or do they basically start up pretty much as soon as the laptop gets going?

it runs pretty quiet when just browsing etc, but when i start a game it ramps up fan speed and can be audible - i've been pressing alt+1 to do max fan speed as i was hitting 90C on Auto fan speed with my GPU on ultra settings with some games like BF1 and COD and that is loud and the fans blow out the back like a hairdryer - no exaggeration!
I just bought a Havit cooler pad for it but im not home to try it for another week

Nice post i've just bought the same spec model near enough. Except I got the 850 evo and the 1 stick of 16gb. how long from order to delivery was it, thanks.

With just general usage (internet browsing, using Word etc) the laptop is virtually silent. The fans will ramp up every now and then for a little while because of background processes like anti-virus, etc using more CPU power, but thats it. Even during gaming sessions, with the fans set to automatic (which is maximum 80%, I believe), the fan sound is obviously clearly notable but is still quieter than my old MSI gaming laptop and will be easily drowned out with a high volume setting.

If you set the fans to 100% (either through Clevo Control Center or Fn+1), however, the thing sounds like a jet engine and is extremely loud (but also extremely powerful) and you would definitely need headphones to escape the fan drone.

I don't use a cooling pad but I'm sure that would help further, have heard of people downvolting their CPU/GPU etc to reduce temps even further but as mine doesn't seem to be exceeding 75c at the moment I see no reason to.

What did you pay for the system? Seems like a serious smoking habit there lol.

I'm looking at a very similar system, but I would like 64gb of Ram. Just trying to decide between a 1070 or a 1080.

I do a lot of image processing and video editing.

I paid just under £2500 for it but looking at the finance option it was working out at £67 p/m, although i didnt pay that as i used savings for it but it helped sweeten the wife haha

hi, i'm thinking of getting the same laptop as you - when you ordered yours did it Gsync on the page? Because i noticed you mentioned G-Sync in your signature when i check the Octane IV page it doesn't mention G-Sync at all....

windows updates,
then go to nvidia and download the latest drivers
install AV if it doesn't come with one

also whats the model of your display? you can find the information by installing https://www.hwinfo.com also it will tell you the temp. of the cpu/gpu

any chance you can post some numbers?

Hi mate I got the 120hz model not sure if it's gsync I just assumed it was and that's why I never bought the 4k one.

I read an article about a gtx1080 laptop the other day. The guy said it was running slower than he thought but then he disabled something and it ran much faster. Can't find the article any idea what it could be ?
