Multirole laptop

So i am looking at getting a laptop, due to the fact that i work away a lot. I currently have a gaming pc and generally don’t game whilst i am away, during the week, so i have never been able to justify a gaming laptop.

But now i am starting a degree, so will need a laptop to work from, whilst i am working away. I need it to be able to watch videos, surf the web, run microsoft office etc.

I’m looking at a laptop, that is no less than:
15” screen
16gb ram
500gb ssd
i7 quad core

looking up a build, a gaming laptop with a 144hz screen and 1650 gpu, seems to be cheaper than a professional laptop, with same stats, but a worse gpu and hz rate.

Does anyone know why this is? Is there something that makes a professional laptop more expensive? I guess being slimmer and i guess material of the case likely influence this, but a lower quality screen and integrated graphics, surely can’t be offset that much by aluminium.

This is what i have so far, but it is a little more than i wanted to pay, realistically i wanted it closer to £1100. I don’t need a gpu that high spec, but the cost between the 1650 and one i selected here was not much. Ideally id have say a 1650 is enough, but not at a £40 difference.

The nova is not laptop, but a DTR (desktop replcement). It means it has a desktop proccesers , and poor battery life ( about 1 hour), since its designed to always be plugged in. Just so you are aware.
Instead of 1x16 gb ram, get 2x8, since ram works better in pair.

at the moment i have it between the cosmo build on here and an asus with a ryzen 9 i have seen elsewhere (not sure if it is appropriate to post the specs of that one on here).

I’m not sure whether the amd ryzen 7 and 2060 gpu is worth the extra £200 over the i7 w/ 1650 gpu. Considering i wont be playing massive games on it. But it will future proof it a bit more i guess?

The problem with the price is that you're not comparing apples to apples. On the Nova, you're selecting a top-tier Ryzen 9 desktop CPU, while in the Cosmos only offers a mid-level i7 laptop CPU, hence the price difference. On the GPU side of things, you could have selected the 1660Ti on the Nova, which anyway is going to be miles better than the 1650 on the cosmos. So those builds are actually not comparable.

What is your need for a Ryzen 9? The Ryzen 5 3600 would be good enough for most people, especially if you're pairing it with a not so top-tier GPU.

You said that your budget is around £1100, which is the first step, but before even thinking about CPUs and GPUs available, you need to decide if: you need battery life; you care about weight and thickness; 15.6 or 17"; Colour accuracy of the screen; is fan noise a problem.

To be honest, if I needed a laptop to "watch videos, surf the web, run microsoft office" I would buy an ipad or a £500 ultrabook with integrated GPU. That's a very light workload to go and spend £1100 on (you were even creating a build with a R9???). Have a look at the thin and light laptops, like the 15.6" INITIA AMD. But if you have money to spare and want something better, then you can still get a Nova chassis with a Ryzen 3 3100 and a GTX 1660Ti. It's the best performance you can get for around £1100.

I went with a ryzen 9 4900h paired with a 2060 gpu.

a £500 notebook would struggle on anything above a small spreadsheet, let alone game on (even if it is gaming that doesn’t require top specs and high fps). My work laptop is an i5-7200 and that is absolutely nowhere near the performance i need.

the initial question was regarding whether there was a difference, between the gaming laptops and the professional laptops, that would explain why a professional laptop would cost so much more.
