HI ,I have a Playstation 3 and a midlle to high end P.C.Now I am looking to invest in a new monitor which will both enable me to play the PS3 and the P.C.Obviously,[or is it?] I would need the monitor to have a HDMI socket. Now I have been trawling the NET and at a price that is in my budget ,they are hard to come by.My budget is up to 136 but preferably as cheap as possible.Any advice as to what monitors would fit the criteria I have laid out would be appreciated.Any thoughts are welcome and thanks in advance,.I am curently trawling the Interenet but have only come across one suitable candidate .As the capability to use this monitor on both formats is paramount any other considerations have been put to the back of my mind though I would stil like the qualities of the monitor to be such as to make good for gaming primarily.
I have another question. Is there a way of getting sound with the use of a DVI to HDMI convertor cable,[example],I once plugged in my x box 360 to one of my monitors via the aforementioned cable and obviously got no sound, image yes,sound..NADA.Is there any technique around this problem apart from having the nonitor HDMI capable.
I came across one monitor on the scan.com site which fit the bill in terms of HDMI capability[unsure whether it is actually a good gaming monitor as I am unable to locate any reviews./the monitor is the Viewsonic VX2239WM 22",LCD Monitor,[price/136 ,including vat] on scan , the LN number is LN 36525
If anyone can comment on this model or generally offer advice please do not hesitate to,Thankyou for reading, greybing.

Wow... paragraph structure much...

Anyway.

The iiyama monitor I've got (From PCS £139) is the E2271HDS and it has an HDMI input and a DVI input. You don't NEED 2 HDMI inputs as you can just connect your PC up via DVI (Same quality as HDMI) and then connect your PS3 up via the HDMI. Problem solved :)

Both DVI and HDMI cables can transfer sound so I don't know why you wouldn't get sound from your xbox if you plugged it in using an HDMI cable. Only things I can think of is that your monitor doesn't have speakers?? Or that because it was a converter cable/adapter it loses sound data :S Not sure on that.

If you're getting a new monitor you won't have to use an adapter or convertor. Just use a standard HDMI cable for your xbox/PS3 and a standard DVI for your PC.

Oh sorry, yes you're right, think I'm getting my cables mixed up. +rep for correcting my stupidity XD

As Maestro says, DVI does NOT carry audio. Forgot the rubbish i've just spouted haha. HDMI definitely does though.

Although if I were you, I'd get yourself a decent set of 2.0 or 2.1 desktop speakers and use them instead as I never find monitor speakers to be suffient enough. Your PC should come with an audio cable for desktop speakers, as should the speakers themselves. Just a thin cable with a green 3.5mm jack.

Hmmm , i dont think dvi can transfer sound, but i could be wrong. Correct me if i am.

They can - but they don't.

A couple of cards were released that output audio through DVI lead but there was no interest in it - mostly because it was analog stereo, no monitors supported it and HDMI was starting to become accepted as the new standard. In fact, NVidia and ATI will be phasing out DVI soon - the target date is 2013.

I like the quote as it is rather funny, thankyou for making me laugh. On the subject of the thread ,I have found a suitable candidate in the shape of an LG W2261VP,22".This fits the criteria well and is being sold on Amazon within my meagre budget.Thankyou for any input .

I can recommend the LG monitors, i've got the M2362D tv/monitor and it's a cracking bit of kit. Was a bit dearer than yours but great value nevertheless.

By coincidence I have the exact same model LG W2261VP & find It an excellent monitor, some people complain about the on/off touch switch & the controls on the side but I dont see any problems with that.I dont know about ps3's,but I can plug In my bluray player to HDMI & get sound through my headphones plugged into the monitors audio out jack,I reckon you could connect speakers to the same jack socket If you wished
