Massive Graphics Card Problem

I'm pretty sure my graphics card has just stopped working. I have th Nvidia GeForce 570 card. I was on the Internet, and had iTunes open. No demanding programs or games open, and then all of a sudden my screen froze and glitchy lines appeared all over the screen. I wasn't able to click anywhere, there was no mouse or screen just lines and blobs. Turned it off, restarted thinking it would have gone as have had this problem ever since I got m computer. Nope, it gives me even more funny symbols, a whole page of characters, and then allows me to get on the computer but with lines on the startup and then when I reach my desktop the display has gone to a very low one. The graphics card icon is my tray says Nvidia display settings are not available, you are not currently using a display attached to a Nvidia GPU. Also on the control panel it's showing that I have no video card :( I don't know what to do. I've only had this computer since February. I have the silver warranty. Whats my best bet guys? I have revision to do, which I need my computer for, and my exAms start tuesday. Thanks for any help.

It does sound like the GPU is on it's way out so you will need to phone PCS up on monday, so what i suggest you try before that is D/L a fresh set of the latest WHQL certified drivers from the Nvidia website and save them to your desktop then install them but make sure you select custom install and then check the box for clean install and see how you go on if this does not work tell PCS when you phone them and they will probably send you a replacement card out if you are confident enough to change it yourself.

WOW, thank-you very much Fear. I coudln't see how doing a clean install on the drivers would have worked, but it did. Saves a lot of hassle now :) The only thing I have noticed though is on the dxdiag the size of my dedicated MB on my GPU has decreased slightly? Is this general wear and tear. I've only had the computer for 3 months.

Thanks, once again. +rep

Np good to hear it has sorted it out for you, i am a little confused about you saying it's showing less MB's though as the drivers would not alter that what is it showing now and can you remember what it was before also looking at details for your GPU i would go to the Nvidia control panel and click on "system information" at the bottom left of the window and see what it shows in there.

Paris has a Massive Graphics Card Problem!!

And the less said about PCS's main office (shed), the better!!!

(Incidentally, this image is clearly photoshopped (Gimped), because there is no way in HELL PCS have ever had 6 (six) 690s anywhere near there office at the same time :D

(Can't even claim this is through boredom, because its nice and sunny...but i'll try it on anyway!)

Yeah I was quite surprised also. Well I did a dx diag on my system about a month before it had this issue, and done one just after to see if it was registering my card and the only differences is the mb has slightly decreased.

Since re downloading the Whql latest drivers 301.42 the same problem has happened again, as well as many times frozen and started showing coloured scattered squares on my screen. It seems to happen every couple of hours, and it's awful. It interrupts my work, and interrupts me chatting to my friends. In reply to what you said ealrier Fear, I think I'm gonna have to give them a ring redo loading the Whql things this time hasn't worked. :(

Do you have Pcie as you main GPU setting in your BIOS? What you could try is

remove the card altogether, (Just remove the power cable from GPU) and use on-board graphics for moment.

Go into comp using onboard and completely remove anything and everything to do with nvidia. Use a driver cleaner, and cccleaner to clear crud registry files and temp files.
Restart still using onboard drivers.
Then Shut down
Put back in Nvidia GPU power and make sure GPU is seated fully by pressing each end making sure is tight in its slot, and then just use the Auto update feature on Nvidia site to get new drivers.

When installing select custom install and tick the clean install box and continue installing. Restart.

Tap Del on startup to enter the Bios and make sure your dedicated GPU is Pcie

Could you possibly post your GPU temps both at idle & at full load after about 20mins or so - if Buzz suggestions don't cure The issue please ?

Could be an overheating problem.
