Cheers, I may give it a try, my only concern is the over-heating issue - if i just use it for storage it should be OK but was thinking about using the external drives to test out different OSs, I had no idea about B, M etc but found this: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015...e-interface-that-will-speed-up-your-next-ssd/

I'm a big fan of Startech personally, they tend to do some good stuff.

I already have a caddy for normal drives so may give this a go, not used any Startech stuff but a friend is a big fan so will give that a close look as well.

Y'see...this backs up my thoughts from the other day as to why I wouldn't even begin to want to build my own machine these days.
I had absolutely no idea these different "keys" existed. And more worryingly I would never even have known to check beforehand.
Granted, it's not likely anyone would be building their own laptop but still...much prefer to hand the issue over to PCS and let them do the hard work working out which bits will work with each other

A quick preliminary review. I decided to go for Spyder's Startech suggestion as something portable would be handier than having to cart a full size docking bay about.
After a few days use I am happy with it. Firstly, it is OK to set up but a bit fiddly, putting the m2 on the internal tray is simple enough and it does have the ability to take different sizes, although while it would take my Kingston m2 the Samsung SM961 M.2, PCIe NVMe would not fit - that may be normal but both drives fit the same place in my new Optimus OK, my lack of knowledge here though, perhaps someone knows more about these drives. Sliding the tray with drive into the main housing is also simple but then comes the real fiddle, the end plate is screw on and the two very small screws supplied did not seem to fit, both twisting and not screwing straight and many attempts, in the end i just help the plate on with a small piece of tape, that will make things easier if I want to put other drives in it, which is likely.
My over-heating worry has not been a problem, I have tried a few things with it so far, installing distro and running a couple of different laptops from it, transferring some large files and converting a load of videos to different formats. Throughout it has stayed cool but I will give it a sterner test when I have time.
I would certainly recommend this, having an external SSD that is so small and easy to carry about is really handy.
