looking to buy my first pc, does this look ok?

hello! i want to buy a pc for video editing, gaming (i don’t mind not playing in 4k), streaming and general work content, but i also wanted to spec it out as much as possible for my budget of around £1.3k. i know basically nothing about computers but i tried to do a lot of research regarding the components.

does this all look ok and will it run well for my purposes? are there any swaps i could make that could improve the build?

thanks!

Unfortunately that's very poorly configured. All the parts are compatible, of course, but it's a very sacrificial PC based around a CPU with lesser spec supporting parts.

What you have specced can't be done at that level for that budget unfortunately. There needs to be either an increase in the budget or a decrease in the expectations of the spec.

You can get a competent system for £1300 but it won't be a specified gaming rig.

Some info here to help us and to give you some insight. Pop back with your thoughts and we'll get cracking :)

thank you for your response!

to be honest, i’m a casual gamer so i’m prioritising video editing and work with this computer (i don’t mind if it’s not 4k video editing but i’d like it to be able to handle long projects of 30min upwards. i also use adobe after effects and premiere pro, if this helps). i’m an artist so i’m ok with not streaming games as well, as i plan on streaming art applications most of the time which aren’t so intensive.

my budget is around £1.3k and the parts i’m willing to skimp out on are the graphics card and storage - but not if it’ll severely hamper the system of course.

i’m currently using a very old and outdated monitor having recently transitioned from using a macbook - i’m unsure of the model but i don’t think it has a very high refresh rate, nor a high resolution. i’ll be getting a new monitor soon and my budget is £100-200.

with this in mind, what do you recommend? thank you in advance for your help!

For a system able to game and stream at the same time, you realistically are looking at around £1800. Based on the CPU you initially chose, this would be the bare minimum:

thank you! unfortunately £1.8k is quite a lot out of my budget. what do you recommend for my budget of £1.3k, specifically for non-4k video editing? i replied to scott earlier with more information, if this helps!

I'm also genuinely struggling. I meant to write video editing earlier, rather than gaming..... I just had that word in my head haha.

It if were my money, this is what I would buy for an entry system. I would look to save more to let it happen. Let me check AMD though in case there are potential savings there:

There are sacrifices here, it is entry level in my opinion. It will have an excellent quality of life though.

Fortunately there are some savings to be had with an AMD rig. I think the 5800X is actually a better fit overall. It will offer fantastic options across all your uses. Again, it's not in budget..... but it's close enough to consider I think.

@Scott Would the 3050 be a better choice over the 2060 given it's newer and with more VRAM? I only ask as that is £10 cheaper than the 2060....I don't really know the 3050 that well.

I think it's got more juice gaming wise, but the 2060 is far more powerful RT wise. It's a little bit of a toss up really. Would need to see actual benchmarks in the softwares involved. I don't know how the compare in Adobe.

Gaming the 3050 has a slight edge though.

thank you for these builds! guess i’ll get saving then.

i wanted to ask, would going for lower ssd storage be a significant impact to the pc’s performance? i have a couple external drives on hand already, so i’m not planning on keeping all my data on the computer. also, i will be using wifi - does this mean i’ll need a wireless network card (and if it does, which one do you recommend)?

Apologies, I missed the WIFI card, amended list below.

For the storage, I would keep what's selected below and add what you have in addition. The second drive is for fast storage, cache and games. It's effectively a "work" drive. You want to keep it fast for quality of life, and believe me it'll make a difference.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm surprised that the 2060 beats the 3050 in non-gaming...I thought the number of CUDA cores was the important factor for editing so expected the 3050 to be better based on that

Cuda cores for some effects, RT cores and tensor cores for others. I honestly can't say either way as each use case will vary.

Here's a little reading that I just spotted on it:

Slightly off-piste but perhaps worth mentioning, the 2070 super is currently cheaper than the 2060 super (although both cards will add about £100 to the price).

With Premiere pro, it will absolutely benefit from a 8 core cpu compared to 6 (so 5800 vs 5600) and its something I play with myself, a scratch drive (can be a cheap small sdd drive) will help but more RAM is a massive boost. I have a 5800XT/2070 super/16GB RAM with a SSD drive set up as my cache folder (scratch drive) and it happily deals with 1440p video, RAM would be the best upgrade to speed it up at this point.

You mentioned budget, and I would really suggest pushing to save nearer 1800/2000 for a genuinely competent machine, and with that said, give it 3 or 4 months to save and the new gen cpus/gpus/RAM/motherboards are all due out so another factor to consider (more performance at similar cost, and also the possibility that current gen may drop a little in price with the new stuff coming out).

Video editing is generally more expensive to spec for than gaming, needs a better cpu, more RAM and still wants a decent GPU where a lot of programs will use it for effects. A better budget will also mean being able to up the motherboard a little which opens up better storage options and such.

I wouldnt want to build a editing PC for £1300, too many compromises and it will kill the longevity of the build. A decent investment at the start will mean a 10 year lifespan with just a couple of gpu upgrades, doing it on the cheap will significantly cut that down and you'll end up completely rebuilding twice in that timeframe and spend more overall.

I really think your best option is push towards saving a £1.8/2K budget and see what autumn brings.

hey! thank you for this comment, it was really helpful.

i’ve never bought a pc before so i didn’t want to splash out just in case i bought something wrong and would regret it later, but i’m willing to spend more upfront if it means i’ll get to use it for longer without having to pay for upgrades - luckily not going out during the pandemic has given me a large pool of savings to draw from! what parts do you think i should keep an eye out for, and what specs do you recommend?

Depending on budget, and with that £1800/£2000 as an aim, something along these lines
(Bear in mind these are draft specs, to give an idea of configuration and ball-park. The mods will be able to tailor a build much better than I can, they know this stuff inside out)

Similar theme to the AMD one, can probably be tuned better as well in terms of motherboard etc but platform is newer, meaning there will be future generations of CPU you could upgrade to in 7 or 8 years to boost performance (by that point, youd be putting in an old cpu, but it would be newer than the one currently spec'd - if that makes sense)

What i'd suggest is to look at what budget you would be able to invest, bearing in mind whats been said.

Its a bad time to buy right now with new stuff due so soon, holding off can mean much more performance for the same budget.
Alternatively, if you want to buy now,. see what current spec they can put together with a revised budget.

The above builds are with a view to give a good editing pc, with a games drive, so should tackle all sides, but both could likely benefit from a bit of tuning.

I don't think there's going to be enough stretch to go from £1300 to £2k though. It's quite the jump. Even if that was possible, with the way the budget is being considered I think it would make far more sense to hold off until the new tech is out.

I don't think the 2070 is a good choice though, it's previous gen..... especially for gaming where it's blitzed by the 3060Ti for new technology. I get that it's a good price right now, but there's a reason for that as well. To be 2 steps behind at the end of the year after spending big isn't ideal.

I think the build I suggested with the 5800X would be the best happy medium. Any extra cash available should absolutely be put on the RAM, then the PSU, then the motherboard, then the storage.... but I wouldn't get carried away on the GPU as that will likely be switched out first.
