Looking for a new chair?

Hi all, ordered a build from PCSpecialist and pretty excited about it, but while it's being built I realised that the chair I'm using here at home is kinda garbage, so I set out to see if I could get something more comfortable. However, I've quickly learned there's a lot more thought put into chairs than what I expected, so I'm feeling kind of out of my depth. There's such a wide array of opinions, often contradictory, that I still have no idea what to get. From what I've gathered so far;
  • Any chair advertising itself as a gaming chair is probably garbage, or at least vastly overpriced.
  • Some brand called Herman Miller Aeron seems to be king, but in addition to being extremely expensive not a lot seem to be sold where I am (Ireland), so I'm not sure if they're feasible to get.
  • Having a chair be as adjustable as possible is very important.
I was looking at the IKEA Markus, which seems to be talked up as quite good for its relatively low price, but when I was researching there seemed to be a near equal amount of people swearing against it. Additionally, the armrests for the Markus seem to be a bit thin from the pictures I've seen, so I'm still undecided.

So I finally turned to here to see if any of ye have any advice or personal experience that may be able to help! My budget would be around €300 if that helps, though it could probably go a bit higher if any of ye felt particularly strongly about a chair. Thanks in advance for any help!

The ultimate office chair to aspire to is the Herman Miller Mirra 2. I’m currently saving for one at moment, it’s a big investment but one that your spine will probably thank you for. @TonyCarter owns this model so will attest to its ergonomic goodness. If you can’t stump up the full amount for a new one, you can often find them a bit cheaper second hand.

Did a quick Google and while it indeed looks pretty class, the price made me wince. Might check around some of the second hand sites and see if any are being sold for a bit cheaper. Thanks for the suggestion! Might have to settle for less though, the idea of using my current 40 quid piece of garbage for months at a time fill me with dread.

Exactly, if you’re spending a solid amount of time sat in chair... get one that’s not going to cripple you in the long term. You’ll occasionally see job lots of the Herman Miller ones on Gumtree or eBay when an office is having a clear out. I’m resigned to buying a new one because I simply must have the Mirra 2 in the orange and white finish. It’s a rarer model 😜

I have "interesting" memories of getting my dream chair. An Eero Aarnio Ball Chair, as used by Number Two in The Prisoner, a beautiful and very comfy chair nut due to my bad measuring somewhat more expensive than expected. Picked up the chair for under a grand which was lucky but paying for the replacement door and door frame I had to cut out to get the chair in to the room was a tad more.

Still very pleased with the chair though.

Post a pic! It’s such an iconic piece of seating!

Maybe I'll just do a quick measurement of my door to make fully sure I don't encounter any similar issues!

The chair in question isn’t your average bit of sit! It’s a big fat ball of awesome! If you’re buying something a bit more standard you won’t need to worry about such things. Just make sure you go for mesh wherever possible, it’s nice to not stick to a chair in the height of summer 🥵

I certainly do that whenever I get anything like that now. It probably did me a favour though as the room needed doing up and as a good mate has his own building and repairs company got a decent job and not too expensive.

Had both doors to the main room done and it has created a lot more space. Instead of normal doors went with bifold type, normally used for wardrobes and while it does not seem a lot the centre split means they only go into the room half the distance of the others.

Actually seeing a used Herman Miller Mirra 1 going for around 350 euros. Would that be something you would recommend?
