Looking for a GOOD Music/Production PC

Hey guys,

It's time to replace my PCS Cosmos Laptop (5 years old) to the spec below. Just need some advice on it. Is there anything else I can do to make this PC last longer as I'll be using it for Audio/Video production (as I'm a music teacher)

Thanks in advance

I make your build come out at about £1850? I presume that would be your approximate budget?

Currently, Intel are outperforming AMD without being significantly cheaper. This means that, for video and audio work, you can get an i5 12600K and get better performance than with a Ryzen 7 5800X. So I'd suggest something like the below system, which will outperform your specced system. My one concern would be if you are doing a lot of video editing: the 3050 is going to be good at that (I use the 1660 Super for video editing and get perfectly good enough performance for my relatively simple needs) but it won't be outstanding, and a 3060 upgrade would be nice.

What monitor are you planning to get to go with this?

Hey, thanks!

I was looking at these monitors

AOC 24G2U 24" 144HZ - DP

I was told that AMD Ryzen is out performing Intel at the moment?

That's a nice 24" monitor, very well regarded. As for the "what's best, Intel or Ryzen?" Argument? It's been firmly in AMD's corner for a while, until Intel came out with its 12th gen chips which have caught most people by surprise and now (in terms of performance) firmly rule the roost. Whether that will remain the case is up to the next gen of AMD chips.

As @Salmon Fisher says, Ryzen is great but for now Intel are on top.

With the displays... The 24G2U is a gaming display, so it's a high refresh-rate and only 1080p. For music and video production, I would have thought you would prefer a larger and higher resolution display, probably 1440p (though of course 4K would be lovely). I would prefer this to trying to fit it all on one screen.

You can get a 1440p 60Hz IPS 27" display for somewhere in the £250 range. I would have thought that will be much superior for you to two of the 24G2Us.

The display you have linked is the 1080p version, not the 1440p version. (And I don't think we need to worry about gaming here?)

Apologies you are correct. I got the 1440p version for £178 just before Christmas. Can only see it for £200 now. However I would still recommend it at £200 if the refresh rate isn't a deal breaker.

Gaming isnt so much of an issue for me. but some nice decent montiors for video creation would be great. Although I need 2 monitors so budget is probably £150-£200 each on those

Why do you need two monitors? I'm not saying it wouldn't be better, but by saying your budget is that for each of them, you're bound to get monitors that aren't great. Better value for money would be to spend £200-250 now, and in a couple of months get a second one to match. If you spend £150-200, you are basically confined to 1080p for good quality displays, 24" in size, and that's not great for video or audio work. There just isn't enough room.

what about these?

BenQ 27" Quad HD 144Hz FreeSync HDR IPS Monitor

Probably perfectly adequate. You'll end up paying a slight premium for the gaming features (high refresh rate, FreeSync), but nothing outrageous. Honestly I'd still recommend the ASUS I linked above, but either will be fine.

Note, though, that the 3050 is not capable of gaming on that monitor. I don't think it sounds like you plan on it anyway, but I thought I should reiterate!

My current set up has 2 montiors. but thye are old 21inch office monitors
First, decide what it is you are likely to need / want from your monitors.
Is 24" the right size?
Is full HD sufficient?
Is 75hz sufficient or 'might' someone want to game on them?
How much do you want to pay?

Only you know the answers to these.

Now the waiting game! - Order is in Pre-Production.... Hope to get it soon.

Did any one have any further thoughts on the main spec - all good?
