Laptop RAM and odd cost increases

Bear with me here, hopefully my point will become clear!

I am in the process of waiting for my Defiance 15.6" laptop to be built by PCS, meanwhile I have been umming and erring about 8GB RAM versus 16GB. I think I would like to wind up with 16GB though, if not immediately then eventually.

My understanding is that in the Defiance chassis is the Clevo P650SE chassis, so it has 4 RAM slots, 2 below the keyboard (harder to get at), and 2 more easily accessible ones from the bottom of the laptop.

If I plug in my spec, and change the RAM, I see the following in terms of cost changes:

  • 8GB Hyper-X: -£78
  • 16GB Hyper-X: No difference
  • 32GB Hyper-X: +£83

I can buy 8GB Kingston Hyper-X Impact 1600mhz RAM from elsewhere for £35, 16GB for £70. This seems to be "market prices".

My point (finally!) is that stepping from 8GB Hyper-X to 16GB Hyper-X ups the cost by £78. Stepping up again to 32GB costs £83 more. The increase in cost from 8 to 16GB doesn't make sense (it costs as much as buying 24GB of Hyper-X), the increase to 32GB is more in line with what I would expect.
