Laptop for professional designer / animator

Hello,
I need a laptop for when I work out of the office...
I'll be working exclusively in adobe creative suite. 50% Photoshop, 50% AE! Very little 3d animation.
This will only be used as a secondary machine, my main PC will be used the vast majority of the time.

what do you think of the laptop spec? Budget is 1.5k-3k GBP. Anywhere I'm throwing money away or anywhere I should spend a bit more for better performance?

Hi, the Recoil model that was posted is from 2022, and I would not buy it today.
We can't comment on the other specs because it's not a PCS system.

Not at that price, for sure.

In my opinion, you should only consider models from 2024.
There are two better alternatives available here: 15'' and 17''.

EDIT: If you need a stronger GPU (4080/4090 only available on RECOIL), you must add an external liquid cooler to achieve peak performance.
I'd add @Tron1982, who is very good on laptops.

Thanks so much! I had originally thought the 4070 was overkill for a laptop due to the limited power? For mostly 2d animations, a 3080 would be sufficient? Seeing your suggestions, I'm not so sure anymore!

Hello, sorry for the delay, i'm a little busy nowadays.

So, from what i know from my sister that doing 2D animation you don't really need a 3080ti, that is an hotter, more powerful, and expensive GPU than a 4070.
From what i saw on pcs, the best chassis right now is the 17" recoil because it has the best screen, ram and cpu. It's a little bit overkill, but I think it will last you for some time.

What proposed @Ekans2011 was almost spot on, but i tweaked it a little :
- I selected the ssd from samsung, because i have the same inside my laptop, but the other choice are good too, it's a matter of personnal preference
- I selected 32g of ram, less memory but a better speed (my sister never used the whole 32go, but it will depend what kind of size your file have, if you need 64, go for it ^^)
- I added the external monitor, as it was from your original spec, but I don't know how good it will be ^^"

So, from what i know from my sister that doing 2D animation you don't really need a 3080ti, that is an hotter, more powerful, and expensive GPU than a 4070.
From what i saw on pcs, the best chassis right now is the 17" recoil because it has the best screen, ram and cpu. It's a little bit overkill, but I think it will last you for some time.

What proposed @Ekans2011 was almost spot on, but i tweaked it a little :
- I selected the ssd from samsung, because i have the same inside my laptop, but the other choice are good too, it's a matter of personnal preference
- I selected 32g of ram, less memory but a better speed (my sister never used the whole 32go, but it will depend what kind of size your file have, if you need 64, go for it ^^)
- I added the external monitor, as it was from your original spec, but I don't know how good it will be ^^"

Have you considered using the PC remotely via a laptop? You could access the PC remotely and pass all the grunt work to the desktop rather than the laptop.

I have a gaming laptop that I rarely use now as I can always just offload any work to my desktop, gaming included (I stream remotely and locally where network permits).

The only limitation would be in offline environments when you couldn't remote in.

few questions - is there minimum spec the laptop would need to be or would it literally just act as a portal to my powerful home pc? I like this solution a lot, actually. Would it operate seamlessly? So no stuttering or delays when I try and perform a task. As over time that would be very frustrating. Now I'm considering saving all the money that was going on a high-end GPU / Processor / RAM and instead just focusing on having a decent lightweight laptop with a good screen. Are there any minimum requirements for this option to work well?

No minimum requirements at all that I've ever stumbled across. I can do it through my phone, tablet, lightweight work-style laptops and I even stream to Firesticks (4k and non-4k versions).

All you're doing is sending video image data and cursor/keyboard inputs, it doesn't take a lot of horsepower to process.

I would recommend still getting something decent in the laptop department, you just don't need to go over the top. For a good experience you typically need 20mb/s. I think most domestic internet would cover this. I've gamed over mobile hotspot in the past, it was absolutely fine.

You're not going to be hitting the heights on a first person shooter, as there is going to be some sort of delay no matter what you do.... but for actually working remotely it's perfect. You don't need 120fps and instant responses for working. Anything around 60fps would be more than adequate.

It would be worthwhile trialling it before you buy. I'm sure you'll have access to a laptop you could try? download Sunshine on your PC and download Moonlight onto the laptop. There's a tiny bit of configuration but it's quite easy to do. This will give you full power from the CPU and GPU, where remote desktop kind of disables the GPU in some situations.
