Laptop cooling stands

Just wondering how many of you lot use these with your gaming laptops and opinions on them. Are they necessary? I am getting a Defiance II laptop in the next week or so and want it to last aslong as possible obviously but I didn't order a cooling stand. Would like recommendations for good ones too from those who use them.

i use one nearly all of the time and would highly recommend them, they will not drop temperatures by much but enough to be of use and, very likely, help prolong the life of the laptop. Unfortunately the Xigmatek I use does not seem to be available any more, pity as it is really basic but very good. My parents use a Zalman, no sure which model, and that is fine.

I assume most can be powered by the laptops USB ports rather than a mains plug? I am looking for one that will sit comfortably on my lap which alot I have looked at don't look suitable for.

I use a USB powered Zalman. Very good brand I think, solid build, seems sturdy.
Like Stephen said, they don't do that much in terms of temp, but over the lifetime of the machine it probably does a lot of good. Most are pretty reasonably priced as well.

I also recommend a cooling stand. I have a twin-fan (large) Avantek stand that is also USB powered. I have mine plugged into a mains adapter though so I don't lose a USB port to it.
