Ladies/Gents/Forum Dwellers who may wish to remain anonymous. I was asked by my dad if I could spec him up a laptop as his current notebook is driving him up the wall (apparently its absolutely atrocious). I asked him the usual questions I see asked on here (budget, uses, must have's etc.) and this is what he came up with...

steaky's DAD said:
12” screen
500gb hard drive
Plenty of RAM
At least 4 USB ports
Wireless n & lan plug
Vga plug
Good battery life
SD card reader

Used for emails , surfing

I have all the software I need other than windows
Not the most helpful of responses but hell.

Now knowing nothing about laptops I've attempted to create something which kind of falls into most of his demands below... I have noticed though the ultranote's only have 3 USB ports (he may give on this but I don't know).

Basically I'm posting this in the hopes someone will do a better more rounded laptop (any kind at all, doesn't have to be an Ultranote)
Just a fyi, he wont use the laptop for gaming at all.

If there are more pertinent questions to be asked I'll get them answered asap.

OK, so my dad got back to me just now (still no budget ... *angryface*)

However he does want a smaller screen (he says 12" but I'm guessing 12" ish will be good). Kinda narrows the choices down to a 14" ultranote and the 11.6" inferno... Which do you think would be most suitable?

Hmm, Inferno doesn't have a CD drive, is that a problem?

For surfing and email i would have thought an i3 or even a dual core would be enough, and you could perhaps reduce the ram to 4gb

One thing to note about the Inferno is that the combination of only 3 USB ports and no optical drive could be a problem if he wanted to connect a DVD drive with a USB 'Y' cable (so the single drive takes up 2 of the PC's USB ports).

Much as I heart my Inferno I think the Ultranote 14 makes more sense here. Quite a bit of the Inferno's price goes on the goodish GPU, which will be useless to you dad. The Inferno's battery life with an i7 is not much more than 3 hours, so you can bet that you won't get much more than 4 hours even with an i3. The Ultranote should easily beat that.

If I were him I'd go for an Ultranote 15 mind you.
