Just put an order in for one of these. Will be used mainly for programming, plus light gaming as I have a desktop that is superior to this, also very useful as I travel every now and then.
i7 3610QM as its the cheapest Ivy Bridge Quad Core laptop CPU intel manufacture, sadly I don't really need all that power... but seeing as the best i5 is more expensive, only dual core (why i5's in laptops are dual core when desktop i5's are quad core I do not know... hyperthreading DOES NOT make up for physical cores intel ) and only 1/2 as powerful, I would be kinda silly to not get the 3610QM... Even the lowest i5 is only £80 cheaper, and that is almost 1/3 of the performance of the 3610QM!
8GB 1600MHz ram because Currently RAM is cheap as hell, and you don't really need much more than 8, I could have opted for 16 as its kind of useful in some cases, however its over twice the price.
SSD as a boot drive + the vast majority of my programs and some games, because they are the BEST upgrade you can get for a modern computer, simply amazing, I have had one in my desktop since they were first released (back then they were 3.5" and barely faster than a VelociRaptor), and have never looked back.
A 1TB 5400 RPM drive for storage, including music, movies etc. (Because who the hell needs a storage drive to be fast?)
Thermal paste because I know using arctic silver in my desktop lowered my temps by almost 10c, and I know laptops get HOT, I have some here I could apply myself, but I have never changed the thermal paste in a laptop, and while I can't imagine its much different than a desktop, I am sure it will be a much more delicate process, so I thought I might as well just pay the extra few quid and get PCS to apply it.
300Mbp/s lan card because we all know how fast technology evolves, and it was only another £14, so I thought what the hell, we already have 100Mbp/s connections so I can imagine we will have 150 + before I replace this.
No OS because, as a student I get a free copy
Sadly I have heard that PCS are having trouble with the amount of 3610QM's being ordered (most likely because everyone has the same idea as me ) so I am guessing it will be here in 14-20 days.
For a total of £849 I have to say I am very impressed, I bought it with some of this years savings and I can't wait for it to arrive!
