Hi

I'm thinking of putting a new ssd drive into one of my old laptops which is running windows 7.

Kingston Technology 240GB Solid State Drive 2.5-inch V300 SATA 3 Upgrade Bundle Kit with Adapter.

It doesn't have a windows7 cd with it. So how would I go about reinstalling the OS?

I just read some reviews about the v300?

"the new version of the drive switched to slower memory chips and is nowhere near advertised speeds"

"the newer V300 drives are performing at less than half the speed of the earlier V300s"

The V300 is pants, unless you get the 480GB model, as that is the only one that runs at the rated speed.

Grab a Samsung 850, they are not too much more expensive and well worth the cash.

You have 2 options for installing the OS.
1. Use some drive cloning software to clone your existing driver including applications and files.
2. For a clean installation grab the windows 7 64 bit ISO from online, follow a guide on how to make a bootable USB and use it exactly as you would a DVD.

I read also about problems with the: Samsung 850 Pro

"My Samsung 850 PRO 1Tb SSD died after only 3...yes...three weeks...after Samsung's Magician software insisted I update the SSD's firmware with a faulty patch...NEVER AGAIN, SAMSUNG!"

There's a facebook page about the Samsung firmware update problem.

Did your Samsung SSD 850 Pro also die after a firmware update? Then this is a great group for you to discuss the issue. Over 450 members.

I'm not aware of the Samsung issue, so I cant really comment. If you look hard enough you will find a problem with just about everything, obviously its an idea to do good solid research but don't be too swayed by a few bad reports as the internet is a great place to amplify any issues.

Personally I have a Samsung drive and it runs great, if you want real assurance then go for intel. They cost a bit more but are some of the most reliable (last time I looked anyway)

A couple of friends use Samsung SSDs and they are well happy with them. I stick with Kingston, but not the V300s, because they have been fine for me. I was a total newbee a couple of years back, I came to PCS as I wanted a laptop with no OS, am a committed Linux user now. One thing In have I have learned from these fora is that any advice given is genuine, sometimes personal preference, as in my preferring Hyper X to Samsung, but always honestly given, we get very few trolls with attitude here and that has been a great help to me.

The Kingston HyperX drives are on a par with the Samsung 850's in terms of price. In terms of best performance the Samsung seems to take it, but really in every day use you would never notice.
