Is this considered an overkill build for todays games?

I think it depends. The 4070 Ti is a really powerful card. Arguably it is overkill for 1440p. But equally, it will enable really high quality 1440p gaming for a long time. Lower-tier 4000 series cards aren't coming soon (Nvidia don't want to compete with themselves!). So your options are to go for an older generation card (the 3070 is the obvious one) and save ~£300.

What I would do, however, is aim for an AM5 build rather than an AM4 one. The 7700X is broadly equivalent to a 5900X in multi-core stuff like Blender (a little behind but not that much) while offering an upgrade path and more modern features. Alternatively, the 7900X is way ahead. The upgrade to the 7900X adds approximately 10% to the cost of the system, but to me that is 100% worthwhile.

Here's the full-fat example (the 7700X or the 3070 or both would be ways of reducing the budget):

Case
CORSAIR 4000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12 Core CPU (4.7GHz-5.6GHz/76MB CACHE/AM5)
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B650-PLUS (DDR5, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s) - ARGB Ready!

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
12GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4070 Ti - HDMI, DP, LHR
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR, 2950MB/sW)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ - MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET

I would advise against the 4070Ti purely on principle. It's on-par with the 3080 and more expensive, which is a slap in the face to consumers IMO.

I would plug in a 3070 with an eye on the 50 series cards in the future.

Not sure that's true. All the reviews I've seen have put it on a par with the 3090 or a touch ahead. But I do agree that the 3070 would be my choice.

Apologies, I actually meant the 3090. The fact that it was meant to be the 4080 light speaks volumes to that comparison also. Very poor offerings from Nvidia. I think the only worthwhile option is the 4090, but it's so expensive.

Hm, my best bet would be this build however I will swap the 4070ti to a 3070 ti as recommended but keep the 7900X. This should last a few years until the 50 series come out and potentially upgrade to a 4k monitor.

The 3070 Ti is £90 more than the 3070. It isn't worth it as the difference in performance is miniscule. I'd go for the non-Ti model myself. But honestly that would be a great build.

Ah, i see, I appreciate you taking the time to look over my build and give feedback along with possible improvements.
