Is this a good spec?

Hi,

New to the whole world of custom laptops, is this a good spec? I'll be using it for office work as well as gaming. I'd like to play Cyberpunk, Assetto Corsa Competizione, stuff like that.

Does anyone know if these laptops have HDMI out?

Hi - some tweaks might be worthwhile so could you have a read at this and post the link that comes at the bottom of the full spec you have posted:

Also whats your max budget, what sort of office work do you do - eg any large / complex spreadsheets?

I did copy the forum version and paste it here, apologies if it isn't easily readable.

Max budget was around £1500 or so but I can stretch for the right device. My current device is 7 years old and I usually use devices until they die or become unbearable to use!

I do some programming for work however it isn't anything that is massively RAM/PC intensive but in my spare time I do video editing as well as wanting to play games on Ultra graphics (at a minimum - high), this is the main purpose of the device. Will this specification be adequate do you think?

I emailed PCS about build times and information on what's in stock/out of stock but no reply from them as of yet apart from their auto reply which is fair as I know they're under a lot of pressure.

If you click on "detailed specification" on the configurator (near the top), it gives a breakdown of the major parts of the laptop...in this case:

"
LAN
1 x RJ-45 jack
USB
1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 Port (Type C), 1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 Port, 2 x USB 3.1 Gen1 Ports
Display
1 x HDMI, 1 x DP 1.2 via USB-C
Microphone-IN
1
Headphone-OUT
1
DC-in
1"

Thank you. I realised that after I posted the spec, should have looked properly before asking.

The spec will do what you need it to...not overly convinced by the need for 32GB RAM but it's only £50 over 16GB so why not?

I'd try and avoid using Intel drives as they have longer term durability question marks. Given you are using this for gaming, I'd go for 2 drives...one for Windows, programs, Steam or whatnot etc on and then put your games on a second drive..that way they don't get deleted if you ever need to reinstall Windows. Normally I'd suggest 512GB for the primary drive but have put 256GB here in the interests of budget (mind you it is only £26 cheaper than the 512GB one!)

Thanks for your reply. Do you think it will run games at Ultra with RTX or will it struggle?

Yes, it makes sense to do 32GB of RAM over 16GB.

Budget constraints are what was stopping me from adding in another secondary drive but you've shown it isn't a huge increase in price.

If you already have Windows no need to buy a new licence, download an iso from your Microsoft account and use that.

If you want to carry on using your old machine, a Linux distro would be ok, if you chose a lightweight one it will help on an old machine.

I think there are still question marks over exactly which variant of 3000 Series cards the Ionico's will have so it's difficult to say what performance you will get. It also depends on the game as well..for example, this is the requirement for The Medium, RTX at 1440p:

"

The Medium ray tracing recommended system requirements - High/1440p/30fps

If you want Ultra settings, then you'd need higher than the 3060Ti....whilst you have selected a 3070 which is higher on paper, in practice the power constraints of a laptop means a 3070 in a laptop is not the same as a 3070 in a desktop.

Now The Medium is quite an extreme example as most RTX games are not as demanding but it gives you some idea...personally, if I wanted to play that game on a laptop, I'd be looking for one with a 3080...but I am not a laptop expert so I may be wrong there

Thanks for your reply, I understand what you're saying. the build sheet says the following, not sure if it's adequate but seems that it is (and the rest of the build seems to indicate that it will be . I don't want to spend almost £2k for a laptop (as I need a laptop, not a desktop) where it will struggle to run high settings. High/Ultra is where I want to be:

NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3070 - 8.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1

I have Windows 10 Home on my current laptop, to be honest, I'd just pay the extra for it and let PCS setup the new device completely, so it's relatively "good to go" as soon as I get it.

I will be giving my old laptop to my other half more than likely so she can use it as and when. I've looked after it, so it still performs general tasks, albeit a bit slow sometimes. I'll put some more RAM in it probably, currently only on 4GB.
