Is the Vortex II going anywhere soon??

I've been looking at, and am planning to buy the vortex II from here. The build I'm getting costs around £800 and I'm mainly getting this build because of the Nvidia GTX 560m in it which I believe is a very high end card.

I have to wait till mid August till I can order it (birthday). Last week though, I was shocked to see that it had gone from the list of laptops you can select. I was quite dissappointed, however I was very much relieved today to see it has returned.

So my question is will I be able to buy the Vortex II in August? Is it going to be abandoned soon? Should I try and buy it asap?? Why did it get removed from the page where you choose your laptop model?

Hi Matt,

The Vortex II is a very capable system.

It has been superceded by the Vortex III therefore PCS are selling their final few Vortex II chassis.

The vortex III features two main improvements; Ivy Bridge 22nm CPU support and immediate support for the AMD 7000 series and Geforce 600M series GPUs. Other than that, a backlit keyboard, the addition of a mini display port and a newer revision motherboard the chassis are identical.

As far as the gaming potential of Sandy vs Ivy bridge goes, performance difference of comparable models (2670 vs 3610, 2760 vs 3720 etc) is almost completely negligable. The main performance difference will come from the new generation of 28nm GPUs. Although the performance per watt TDP of these new GPUs is more substantial than previous generations, the difference between the two chassis is heavily reflected in their price; the Vortex II is incredibly cheap, making it more worthwhile now than ever before as a budget gaming system.

The 560M is still a very capable GPU and will deliver 30+ FPS in medium/high presets for a good time to come. It is powerful enough to deliver up to 40 FPS in Battlefield 3 High presets for example when paired with a decent CPU (2520M or above).

If you were looking to spend more money on a higher performing system, the only really worthwhile option would be a Vortex III system with a 7970M, but at that point you would be looking at £1350+ for a decent spec.

Click the link below for 560M benchmarks. The 7970M would deliver significantly higher performance (up to 4x the performance depending on game, making Ultra presets as playable as High presets on the 560M); whether or not the Vortex II becomes a worthwhile investment depends on whether you can afford and would be wi lling to pay the extra £400+ for a Vortex III system with 7970M instead.

My personal opinion is that a 675M is good enough, however given the considerable performance increase of the 7970M over the 675M (+40-75%) it would be crazy to opt for a 675M over a 7970M in a Vortex III.

Best of luck with your decision.

Okay thanks,

I'm already pushed for money at £800 so I really can't afford the Vortex III

I'm right in thinking that the GTX 560M is far better than cards like the GT 555M aren't I?

Do you have any idea how long I have to buy the Vortex II before it is sold out??
