on the front edge of my vortex 3 (left hand side) is what looks like an IR sensor/transmitter.

there is no mention of this in the documentation.

is it an input or an output?

what can I use it for?

Is nobody curious as to what this IR port is for?

Am I the only one?

Or is the answer so obvious that I am being silly?

If it works you could use it with an IR Remote to control media player or DVD's like the Media Centre Remote Control or to send documents to printers with an IR receiver. Its not something that's commonly used anymore i guess.

I havent tried it on my new machine, i dont have any IR products anymore to test it with. I had on previous machines like 4 years ago, infact Macbooks have it too. I havent seen any software for the IR port in my use of the machine though.

OH it maybe only usable if you went for the TV card option when ordering the machine. The TV card coupled up with the IR port for controlling it perhaps?

No your right enough. It says its an option in the manual i have at home im pretty sure.

Perhaps its just not in option on the UK models

Aye, might be the case. If you mean the PCS manual I think that's pretty much a generic document though :)

Bah, its a shame there isn't a use for it. Although it would be handy if you were using the laptop as a music system to be able to remotely change songs etc.

I had a look at the Clevo site in US and they offer the Clevo TV Card with the Vortex range which states it utilises the IR Port but i dont think i can post the site on here. If you google Clevo PH150HM that is the Vortex 2 just the American Code and you can see the TV card options.

It would be handy for a remote but i use Unified Remote on my android phone and it works through WIFI or BT and you can do anything from Mouse to a Keyboard to Just a Media Remote its cood and free.

For the iphone i have the Itunes remote and another program called Magic Mouse that lets you do the same as the above APP.

IR you have to be right in front of the machine so i guess thats why its handy for TV use but WIFI remotes can be used anywhere within the same network.
