Internet Explorer end of support

As always, many apologies if this is already well known, but it was new to me. I did a forum search but didn't come across a reference to this.

I don't use IE as my main browser, and haven't done for many years, but there are odd occasions when I'll fire it up for this or that. For those that also use IE a little or a lot be aware that support for versions of IE prior to IE 9 will cease completely on 12th January 2012. This means that any security holes found in earlier versions will not be patched. Ever.

The version of IE that will be supported after 12th January 2016 varies depending on the version of Windows you're running, Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 users should note that it's IE 11 - all earlier versions of IE will become unsupported on 12th January 2016.

Note also that Windows 8 itself will also become unsupported on 12th January 2016, so if you decided to stick with it and not upgrade to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 you'll need to consider your position.

One is Java based (doesn't work well with chrome) and another one requires Silverlight browser plug-in from Microsoft

The January date for windows 8 is just end of service packs. Mainstream support ends Jan 2018, end of extended support is in Jan 2023. Windows 7 already ended mainstream support in 2015.

Market share shows plenty of people use IE. I use opera mainly, but sometimes use IE (or now Edge) if I just want to quickly check something. I switched from IE long before it became trendy (before Firefox or chrome even existed), but I don't see what's the big deal about what people use.

I am still using it, some work software web based only works with IE.
I've had excellent results with the IEtab addon for Firefox (although I use it with Palemoon). There have been a few sites that needed a bit of tinkering, but I've always managed to get them working in the end.

Just mentioning it as being worth a shot because knowing someone has to use IE makes the web want to cry.

Indeed and I checked on this before posting. The end of life informaton from Microsoft is confusing. On their main Life Cycle pages for Windows 8 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?alpha=Windows 8&Filter=FilterNO#;) it does indeed state that only Service Pack support is ending on 12th January 2016. However, in the FAQs on their Life Cycle pages (https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle#gp/LifeWinFAQ) they say that:

7. What is the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy for Windows 8.1?

Windows 8.1 falls under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8, and will reach end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023. With the General Availability of Windows 8.1, customers on Windows 8 have 2 years, until January 12, 2016, to move to Windows 8.1 in order to remain supported.
