How do I know if the laptop is using the internal Intel 4000 GPU or the external GTX 670m GPU?

is there a way to tell?

There isn't a way to know at a single point in time which GPU is in use. However it is safe to say, when graphics demand is high, the dedicated chip will be supplying the load.

I have a tool tray icon to show me when a specific gpu is in use. Nvidia control panel has this option.
