Hello all,
Sorry if this is a bit long,
Anyway I'm look to get a new laptop with in the next few days and I just wanted a little bit of advice, my budget is around £1,000 mark (quite willing to go above).
This is what i'm currently looking at

Chassis & Display
Vortex II-15: 15.6" Full HD LED Backlit 16:9 Widescreen (1920x1080) Super Clear Glossy
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2720QM (2.20GHz) 6MB Cache
Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB)
Graphics Card
1.5GB nVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M - DirectX® 11 (15.6" Vortex II)
Memory - Hard Disk
320GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD3200BEKT, SATA 3 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
Memory Card Reader
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)
Bluetooth & Wireless
GIGABIT LAN & INTEL® CENTRINO® ULTIMATE-N 6300 WIRELESS upto 450Mbps

The most demanding application the laptop will be used for will probable be autocad (3d). Keeping that in mind I also want the laptop to be quite future proof which happens to be one of the deciding factor for choosing PCS.

Anyhow the problem is in regards to ram and I have read a few threads but none really answers my question. Basically I was looking on intel's website and they suggest that the processor that I have choosen will only support 8gb @ 1333mhz and yet I have seen that 16gb @ 1333mhz and 8gb @ 1600mhz seems to run fine with this processor. I know using its not advisable to use different types of ram but what about using 16gb @ 1600mhz, im guessing this is not possible but is there any room to upgrade the 8gb @1600 mhz?

Another little concern I have which is going to make me sound like a bit of a noob but in my spec I have decided not to have an os installed because my uni will give me a free copy of windows 7 pro (x64). I have installed many operating systems on my laptop before but never on a completely new machine and I just want to make sure its going to be as easy as putting in the cd and letting it run?
Again sorry for making such a long post I just want to be sure before I purchase anything.
I would also like say how impressive your service appears and if all goes well ill defiantly be a returning customer
all the best

If budget is not really an issue, and you want to future proof, get the 485 gfx and 17.3" screen :)

No graphics are meaningless to me and 17.3 would just seem like I was trying to make up for something small

Thanks for the input
true, cad does use a lot of gpu but my gf's laptop is using the 1st gen i7 and some older nvidia card and that just about does the job, but im thinking that 16gb of ram will give me enough shared graphics to do the job since cad can be tuned to optimise the shared graphics. I have read that the 2nd gen i7 seems to handle 3d rendering almost twice as well as the 1st gen. So ill try and avoid spending £400 on a graphics card since I dont play games.
I'm guessing by your signature you have a vortex II 17.3, whats it like? good machine to use?

I love it. First custom build machine I've bought. Always built my own. Some say the LED Screen isn;t as good as others, but I like it. Would have prefered to get the 485 gpu, but budget wouldn;t allow the additional 400 spend :D

I know the vortex II 15.6 and the vortex II 17.3 are build from similar frames so whats the keyboard and mouse pad like I have been reading that a few people have they dont like it?

The thing is, laptops are a very personal thing. My last machine was an IBM Thinkpad, before that a Dell, before that an HP. The wife has a Toshiba. Personally, I prefer my Vortex over anything I've ever had. The other thing to remember, is that people are generally creatures of habit. Getting used to a new keyboard layout/spacing does take a little time.

Well I have read loads of reviews of similar models using all kinds of specs and I only found a few that gave it less than 4/5, but the main complaints I found seemed to be with the mouse and the battery(which isnt important to me) but the reason im getting a new laptop has a lot todo with my mouse buttons F****** up so Im just a little worried about that but I get guessed but I guess most people where just picking at straws. But always good to have a second opinion.

Absolutely :)

I'm in the same boat with BAttery. The reason I went for the 17" screen, is that this is effectively a desktop replacement for me. So it's VERY rare it'll ever be run not on the mains :)

Oh, something I would add, consider putting in a SSD - say the intel 120 510. I've got the 320 in mine and loving the load times of my software and OS :D

Well im not really keen on a ssd, I have 250gb one now and its just not performing as what I expected so I would rather spend more on a processor and less on storage.

Dose anyone have any idea about my ram question?
