In memory of Vanthus

To me Vanthus was a giant on here, when I first joined the fora almost 2 years ago he was everywhere, and always with sound advice and good solutions. I'm two time zones ahead of the UK and yet, in the mornings when I opened new tech support posts, Vanthus had already posted the best solution or advice. He was the first member to send me a friend request, I don't know that they mean much on these fora but it was a great honour to be recognised by the top guy on the fora (that's how he seemed to me anyway).

So....should we/could we do something to remember the massive contribution Vanthus made on here? If so, what can we do?

I was kind of wondering out loud that since Vanthus had a stratospheric rep and was usually right in his solutions/advice, whether we could instigate a "Vanthus award"? A particularly elegant solution, or a subtle piece of diagnostics, or a particularly insightful post, could be tagged as a "Vanthus solution" both to demonstrate our admiration for the posting and to remember that Vanthus would probably have posted that himself.

What does the panel think? Is this appropriate? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The number of posts you have seems to correlate to the label you have under your username (rising star, expert etc).

Maybe the highest possible label could be... "Vanthus status".

That's a good idea. We could also chip in to send some flowers to the family

They're both nice ideas, and I'd be very up for both of them. I like the rise from "Godlike" to "Vanthus".

While a nice idea I wonder if its possible. I think the names are set by vBulletin and are the same on most forums. So I don't know if they can be changed with vB. But it would be nice to find out if it is possible and go ahead with it if possible.

PCS are naming their next pre-built PC after Vanthus :) https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?39717-The-Vanthus&highlight=vanthus

Maybe you're suggesting we should do more?? Or this is an 'aside'?

I didn't know about this. What a fabulous way to be remembered.......

This gets my vote too, Vanthus should be the highest level....

That's great then, I've never used it before so was going by the fact that most forums I see all have the same rank names.

Posts are one thing. As has been stated, the ranks are linked to post count. However, our friend V's legacy is his reputation (both actual and forum statistic), so I would be interested to know if forum titles etc can be linked to rep. Then, when someone passes V's current rep, they are awarded that title. (because let's be honest, we can all spam a crapload of posts about nothing...doesn't mean it was helpful :D )

Probably stretching VB just a little bit now, but just a thought :)

Yeah and it will take us years to get to almost 15k rep xD. Cos lets face it, we all just post spam 90% of the time.

Vanthus joined the forums at about the same time I did, didn't seem that long ago till I looked.

I think PCS naming the next designed system in his name is about as huge as it gets in terms of how much of an impact he had round these parts. There has been talk of sending flowers etc but im not quite sure how it would work. I'd be happy to contribute and what not, even collect the money from anyone who wanted to contribute but I wouldn't have a hop in hell of picking anything appropriate. I have no idea how you would actually go about coordinating everything as im sure everyone would want an input.

So with that in mind I propose this... A simple card offering condolences from anyone who wishes to have their forum handle included? If the idea is one people are interested in I will start a new thread where people can post to be included and I will organise a card printed and delivered offering our condolences to his family and letting them know that he will be sadly missed here too.

What do you guys think?

I think all of the ideas are excellent and I'm very much willing to contribute/assist. Difficulty would be in handling the delivery of said token obviously that's fairly personal information, although I'd guess one of the admins would help out there.

I agree - the build is pretty awesome. I'm happy with a card - I mean, I didn't really know the guy beyond what he posted, but he was pretty great on the forums.

Did you delete my last post about rep btw? Was just a joke but I understand! :)

Yeah there are 3 posts that got the chop, not by myself but they were probably a bit out of kilter with the tone of the thread. So I agree they should be hidden

A card or something is a good idea but it the funeral etc was a while ago they maybe want to get past it and move on. Perhaps sending a card this late on might not be a great idea.

I might be wrong its just something the sprung to mind as a possibility.

I don't mean to sound like a bad guy.

This is a good point, the family might find it strange that a bunch of people with handles they don't recognise have sent a card - and late. My original idea was that we do something to remember Vanthus on here, the Vanthus PC is about as good as it gets but I do like the idea of the max rep level being Vanthus as well.
