Everything has been working flawlessly up until this point.

The disk drive can read DVD's and CD's fine, I have also managed to burn a CD no problems at all and it plays perfectly.

I am however having problems burning a DVD, whether it be data or a video DVD.

The drive simply doesn't recognize that I have any media inserted. I have tried Tesco and Verbatim DVD-rs and also an old DVD-RW disk.

Here are the results from the Nero info app:

I have checked for the latest driver updates, and everything is up to date. Can my drive only write to DVD+rs?

The drive can write to both + and - but sometimes some discs can be fussy. As you've tried two, it could be a different issue. I would recommend you contact our call centre for further advice.

Well things turned out worse afterall, when I said the drive could read DVD discs but not write I was wrong. I tried putting one of my PC game disks in after the initial problems I mentioned with the blank media not being recognised and the drive wouldn't read them either after that.

It all started out when I was trying to burn a video onto a DVD on Nero which ended in an error half way through the burn, since then the drive was acting suss. CD's still worked and were being recognised by the drive.

So this afternoon after my opening post, I went into the device manager uninstalled the drivers and then rebooted and re installed them. No luck
Next I tried a system restore back to before the initial problems but this proved a bitter blow as my restore point somehow became corrupted so I could no longer boot into Windows 7.

I knew the system was virus/malware free as I scan on a daily basis but for some reason my restore point ended up loading a dead screen, even safe mode didn't work.

So I tried a reinstall with Windows 7 and the drive didnt even recognise the Windows disk in the drive off initial boot. I contacted the call centre and the guy was very helpful. I explained the situation, we tried different solutions and has decided to send a replacement drive which should arrive tomorrow with me sending the faulty unit back.

Super super fast response, first class. Hopefully tomorrow I can report some good news.
