Hey everyone!

I thought I was decided on the spec I was going to buy but now thinking about this.

My one i'm about 80% on is the intel based spec the one I've started to think about is the AMD.

I'm going to be using this for playing all the new games BF3, skyrim etc all on max is the plan! as well as using it for gam design and programming for my computing degree.

Let me know what you think of the two options.

Thanks

drop the k variation on your intel chip as by the looks of your system specs you are not overclocking.

If you plan on overclocking upgrade your cpu coolers You may want to increase the capacity of your PSU. Intel one wins by far.

If not ocing drop the k

Ok thanks, I've change to the 2600 rather than the K. I wasn't quite decided if i would want the option for the future, but i've never been one for overclocking. Thanks for the advice.

Any other suggestions?

Its my pay day today and I got paid a lot more than I thought, I was planning on getting this mid september but hopefully I'll be able to get my Wife to say yes to buying in a lot sooner!

I've got my PS3 so don't really need another blu-ray. It may be something I add later on.

I think I will be going for the Intel spec, Years ago I used to build all my, friends and families computers and always went for AMD but this was about 7/8 years ago. I've been out of computing for a long time now and it changed a bit since then, I really wanted to go for a custom built pc but thought it would be best to get from here rather than do it my self. Until I get back into it all that is.

Its taken me a long time to persuade my wife that I need a budget of £1800 and that I really do need a computer like this, but she's finally come round to it.

well due to ps3 upscaling you havent ever watched a true blue ray so getting one in your pc may be a bonus . i totally understand your choice in intel but if you do wait till september amd are bringing out the bulldozer chip (a 8 core processor) you wouldnt need this for gaming as such but from what i understand it uses unactive cores to speed up used ones (it overclocks itself) so its worth a thought if your being impatient you could go for a phenom x4 chip on a am3 socket and be able to upgrade to a bulldozer and id guess it would still be cheaper than your intel choice but its something that you could research.

Yeah upscaling sucks on ps3. Loads of players even do it. I think the bulldozer thing is a good point. When zambezi comes out intel have good competition. Zambezi is meant to be really good for gaming and 6+ cores is powerful for design and programming

Hahaha thats what I was worried about! New technology coming out soon! I've been out of the business so long I didn't know what was coming out! Just had a quick read about Bulldozer and Zambezi, looks very interesting! Will have to read a bit more before making a decision.

Say I was to go for the wait and get the bulldozer or maybe Zambezi (any ideas when this is planned to be launched) any ideas on the cost? Also what GPU would you recommend?

I'm still very tempted with the Intel but this has swayed me a bit more towards AMD.

Sorry NMEbowen I forgot you said September, I read you post quickly while searching for info on the bulldozer, then when replying forgot you said September.

It is a tempting idea! thanks for mentioning it

as most games currently run 4 cores i think 6 is overkill but saying that ive gone for a 6 core myself its your choice but personally its alot of money for something that will be made obsolite in a few months time not only are amd bringing out the bulldozer which is a am3 socket but they are also bringing out a chip on a new socket fm2 this has been dubbed piledriver and will be a 10 core chip this is being introduced some time in 2012 so i think the best idea is to take the plunge and get what you want but try not spend too much.

I would personally get a Phenom system and then get piledriver a year or 2 after it's released

as i said the phenom is am3 and the piledriver uses fm2 so it means a new motherboard also and by then there will also be new gpu and most likely new everything so take the plunge and get what best suits you now.

Exactly why I'd wait. I would get a cheap Phenom (like current prices) and when Piledriver is out upgrade my mobo and cpu and probs mem and gpu
