High pitched noise coming from pc

Quite possibly from the CPU cooler

this is REALLY annoying, in brand new state my PC was making this noise.

PCS are too slow with customer support via email so I'm hoping someone here can help me.

Could a voltage regulator be broke? I don't know what else it could be.

It sometimes goes away but comes back and it gets louder under heavy load, meaning to me that the CPU cooler goes faster when the CPU has to be perform so as to keep the CPU cool so it most likely is the CPU cooler.

This + tinnitus is very very annoying and almost impossible to use my PC if I'm not listening to music.

**** that

thats a premium rate number i just spend £860!!

but thank you very much i appreciate your response

i guess ill just wait a week or so for them to email back, if it is dodgy i will be very upset, NOTHING on this machine should be ''dodgy'' as it is brand new.

Well, dodgy probably wasn't the best choice of words,I meant faulty,
any brand new component can be faulty, fact of life i'm afraid.

0844 is not a premium rate number. It costs up to 5p/min for BT customers. Mobiles are usually a lot more though. Call your landline provider and they will tell you what they charge to call 0844 numbers.

Couldn't you work out that by 'dodgy' vanthus meant 'faulty'? I don't think PCS are in the habit of buying parts 'off the back of a lorry'.

As PF says, 0844 is termed "Lo rate" or some such. The only thing below that is freephone, and that just doesnt make good business sense :)

The phone line is the best, most reliable and quickest way to get an answer from PCS, fact :)

yeah they tech support is better than I have seen anywhere.

Also they actually know stuff and want to help you, unlike other companies such as overclockers/pc world/currys/comet/everyone else.

What case have you got? I had this problem aswell and found that despite the innards being put together very well whoever had put together the ports at the back had done so the wrong way around on my one and one was slightly touching the graphics card. As it was a metal part; got the worst sound a bit like what you have described. Looking at the way the case was made it was an easy mistake to make with no way of seeing which way round it should have gone so i just spent the time putting it right. Took 5 mins. Mine would get louder as the graphics card worked more and vibrated the case more as the fan sped up lol.

I thought something major was up until i inspected myself as it performed so well. If there was anything majorly wrong with the voltage regulator I would have thought you may have been getting other problems. Capacitor whine on gpus is annoying; but this cant be helped aside from replacing the gpu if it is excessive. How do you know its coming from the cpu area? I had to literally get a screwdriver on my case to find out where the noise was coming from and then; opened it up to inspect. Narrowing down where the noise is coming from will help. As Vanthus says I have heard faulty psus make a high pitched whining noise. This will need to be replaced if it is definitely that. Any other problems with the pc or is there just a noise?
I have also known broken brushless fans etc to make these type of noises too; so could be a gpu/psu fan. Again; will need to be replaced.

How do i know it comes form the cpu cooler? by using a tube of plastic as a stethoscope.

also going by this logic.

under normal browsing circumstances the whine is quiet.

as soon as the CPU comes under heavy load (crysis) the whine is louder.

this means that it is the CPU cooler, as the CPU has to perform more heat is given off therefore the CPU cooler has to work harder to keep it cooler.

This is how I know it is the CPU cooler.

Unless another component is affected by this too and would change in the same manner.

In which case I can't be dealing with this, it's a brand new PC I should not be having to diagnose a problem and am not going to commit any valuable time to solving this.

regardless, it is defective, the terminology matters none.
