Help with new AMD Ryzen & 5090 GPU custom build

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my current PC which is nearly 7 years old. The 2080 RTX Rog Strixx GPU has served me well, but is starting to show its age as it struggles to run some games at maximum settings. I have configured the set up below, but I haven't used an AMD chipset for a very long time. I welcome any thoughts before I commit to a purchase.

Thanks in anticipation.

Can you have a read of the following, and answer some of the questions raised...
  • We need to know your uses (is it 100% gaming rig, is it 100% rendering rig, is it a general use rig, etc.), as this will inform the best GPU, CPU & RAM config;
  • If it's a gaming rig, we need to know your monitor specs (make & model, or resolution& refresh rate);
  • We need to know your MAX budget, so we don't select items that completely blow it;
  • We Need to know if you have anything you'll be transferring over from the old PC (Windows, SSDs, etc.) so we can leave them off the new build
What you've configured so far, looks more like a rendering rig than a gaming rig...if that's you're intention then make that clear.

If it is a gaming rig (the only use you mention is gaming) then, as Tony, suggests, some areas are less than well optimised. For example, the 9800x3D is the king of gaming CPUs at the moment so, unless you are running some particularly CPU heavy RTS games, that would be the chip you want; there's no benefit beyond 600MHz, maybe 6400MHz for gaming; it's best not to have everything on the same drive...better to have a small fast primary WIndows drive and then a second large games drive; don't need the thermal paste with Corsair coolers as they already have paste applied at the factory.

Apologies, yes I'm looking for a 100% gaming rig. I have a rather unusual set up regarding monitors as I connect to either a Samsung 85" (media theatre room) &/or Sony 65" OLED (lounge). These are both 4k smart TVs. I appreciate a monitor will provide the best clarity, but this not something I want to consider. I also frequently connect to Nreal AR glasses (can only render at 1080p) and currently Reverb G2 VR (although looking to change that too). I'm not looking to move aything across from my current PC as all my photos etc are backed up on my Qnap server. My maximum budget is around the £5k mark (as per quote).

Thanks both for your advice. I made the classic mistake of assuming the the more expensive Ryzen 9 would perform better than a Ryzen 7! I think fundamentally that is the main component I need to change.

Hi again, so I've being doing some more research and happy with changing CPU to 9800x3d.

I'm also looking to change RAM to 6000Mhz, which appears to be the 'sweet spot' for the above Ryzen CPU. However, the only 32gb DDR5 kit which PCSpecialist offer at 6000Mhz, has a latency of CL36. I'm led to believe I should be aiming for 30 or even 28. I'm looking at a quite hefty budget of £5k, so I want to get this configured to run at its optimum. Again, I welcome your feedback as its been 7 years since my last upgrade! Thanks.

If you want specific timings you'd have to source the RAM yourself, as PCS (or any integrator come to that), will not keep hundreds of different SKUs on hand for the 0.1% of outlier builds. Just add in the cheapest single stick you can and then install your own.

Same goes if you want a specific case that PCS don't offer, or a specific GPU (like a melty Founder's Edition). But with the issues we're seeing with some 5090s, many would recommend saving £1000 and going for a 5080 for now...and then using that £1000 in a couple of years when a) new model comes out; or b) the melting issue is resolved.

Yes, the 9800X3D is the fastest gaming chip currently. We were hoping the 9950X3D would have a simple doubling of cores and cache, which would have made it the gaming CPU of the decade...but they decided to only have the same X3D v-cache as the 9800X3D. Great for mixed use of gaming/rendering though.

Great advice Tony regarding the RAM. I don't know why I didn't think of that! I believe they are offering 20% off Corsair so could potentially make use of that i guess. Thanks for coming back. Much appreciated 👍

Be aware that the 20% offer is only on 'select peripherals' not components...and you won't really know whether an item is included until you add the code to your basket.
