Help with editing pc build

Hey guys, looking for some help to put together an editing pc, not too knowledgeable about pc components if I’m being honest or what I can get for my budget.

im a post graduate filmmaker so I’m often editing short films and other content on premiere pro, so I’d like it to be able to handle an edit with a lot of components easily, ideally including 4K footage, but if 4K is out of my budget range then not the end of the world. I also use Adobe after effects and Adobe audition.

(side-note: if it could handle some casual gaming as well that’ be great)

i also have a monitor and these are the specs:

You have not said if you need any extras such as DVD or Blue-Ray so have not included. After effects likes 32GB of RAM and a 4GB graphics card will help with transcoding. A reasonable CPU is also need so a difficult balance with to keep within the price range. I have included a reasonably size HDD for video storage and a 1TB SSD for fast access to video being edited. So spec below is a starting point, I am sure others will suggest changes. I expect it will game quite happily. If you click on the URL you can play with the options to see the effects on the price and any other bit you need. Always have (2 x Size) if you change the total amount of RAM.

in regards to the cpu would you say it is adequate for my needs? I wouldn’t mind spending a little more if you think I need a slightly better one.

I have only dabbled in video editing so not sure where the main work load is the CPU or GPU (Graphics Card) which does the video display and at the end any transcoding you need. For games the GPU does the display rendering giving the nice display. For the CPU it is probably better to go for a Rayzen n 5nnn such as the Rayzen 5 5600X (which is a bit cheaper and faster than the 7 3700X which I didn't realise sorry) as the 5nnn is for ZEN3 the newest version. The 7 5800X is £82 over your limit and the 9 5900 is £172. You could go for the 5 5600X and push the graphics card up a bit. I think the system is reasonably balanced so have a play with the CPU and GPU until the wallet empty.

Was staying with NVidia graphics as read some video software cannot use Radeon, the web says Adobe can so you could change graphics card to Radeon 5nnn as they are PCIe gen 4 so the interface is better and the bench tests are a bit quicker than the 1650. The 5500 (10% quicker) is in budget with the 5 5600X and the 5600 (50% quicker) (special offer) is £80 over. Sorry to keep adding to the options.

Are you replacing an existing PC or laptop? If so, you can transfer the Windows licence and save about £100.

@Scott was very helpful in putting together a photo editing build for me. My budget is different, so you would have some different components. He may suggest looking at a different case (for air flow) and PSU (for future upgrades). You could select a 500 MB M.2 drive to save some money. It is worth paying £5 more for the silver warranty.

I would advise holding off. It's rumoured that the 3060Ti is to be released on Dec 2nd. That being the case it's likely the best GPU to pair with an editing system.

I don't know if you can have it all for ITRO £1300 but it won't be THAT far off and will offer a significant advantage in all uses that you have suggested.

With regards to the rest of the build, as suggested above you are quite far from the mark on the Case & The PSU. These need to be properly considered as contributing factors to performance and usefulness.

Thanks for the reply, do you know if you can transfer the windows License from a pre-built laptop? As in I bought it off a website and didn’t buy my own version or not that I can remember.

I believe you should be able to. You need to link the licence to a Windows account. There is a post showing how to do this. I am sure one of the experts will be along to explain how.

It depends on your Windows install. If it's an OEM version which came with a store (eg Curry's, Dell) machine then you you can't.

Not true.

Microsoft state that OEM licenses cannot be transferred as is. They also state that you can activate an OEM version with a digital license tied to a Microsoft account AND they state that Windows can be activated with a digital license after a hardware change. They don't specify what that hardware change can be and in particular they don't prohibit the hardware change being a completely new PC. Of course the old PC that had the original OEM license will then not have a valid license.

Hopefully it can, otherwise I've just stopped my mother-in-law from being able to use her current misfunctioning one until we can get her the replacement I've bought her!

Ah. If you've signed in on your PC using a Microsoft id associated with a digital license that you MIL was using you may well have done. You can only use a single digital license on one PC. You might have some explaining to do to your MIL. Get some flowers ready a big bunch. :)

Haha. It's a new PC with a new license, so hopefully it will be OK.
