Help please :)

Hi folks new here so please go easy on me.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to PC specs so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking to builld a gaming rig that will play Battlefield 3 and any other new games on the horizon.

I could potentially spend anything between 500-1500 so there's plenty of wiggle room although if i'm hitting the top end of the budget it may need to have the monitor included.

Basically I need to know

Whether this will play all the games I want in the next 18 months or so and if not what sort of price/spec will I need.

As I say i'm pretty useless in this department so any help would be welcomed. :)

Looks ok to me,but whether It will play all games you want In the next 18 months, who knows.
People talk about future proof, but who can tell the future.
It's pretty similar to my pc which I'm hoping to last a couple of years with an upgrade of ram later on,from 4gb to 8gb.

With a budget of "upto" 1500 you could go for an i7, GTX 580, Caviar Black 1TB and a 24" monitor and still have some change to play with.

Looking at this setup now.

How much of an improvement is it over the first option?

As LinearHD said above the 580 will be fine, it will do all you need for the time being but there are ways to improve your spec and future proof your PC aswell.

The spec below has a better CPU and you only need 4GB ram for a gaming machine you can always upgrade later on in it's life if the needs come for more, i have dropped the CPU cooler to the super quiet as you only need water cooling if overclocking also i dropped the Bluray drive down to the £49 one as it's probably very doubtful you will be writing to bluray disc's, now there is a good decision to make i have put an GTX580 in there with a 1000W PSU which will cover for sli 580's at a later date and a smaller 640GB primary HDD which will be slightly better on performance than the 1TB but i have also put a 1TB HDD in for storage (now the decision bit) if you don't want to go for sli at a later date you can drop the PSU to a 650W and change the 640GB HDD to a 120GB intel 320 series SSD, i would stick with what is below but it depends what you want at the end of the day.

Thanks lads, heard nothing but good things about this forum and so far so good. :)

Fear would you say looking to the future I would be better leaving the option for SLi? I know SSD drives are the s*** but is the difference worth it?

Also I agree with the RAM as it's one of the things i'd be comfortable upgrading myself.

Don't get paid till wednesday so there's still plenty of time for decisions.

The sli really depends if you want that or not at a later date as any dual GPU system has more to go wrong with game incompatabilities but from what i have seen i think the support is much better for these so i have left mine with the ability to go for it if i want really the best solution is the simple 1 of get the strongest single GPU you can which at the moment stands as the 580 so really it is something you need to decide for yourself.

At the moment i don't think that SSD's are worth the money as they are still fairly new and being improved all the time so i will wait till they become more reliable and cheaper tbh i am happy enough with the load times of my games and other things with my normal HDD's i mean the system boots up in what 1-1.5 minutes on HDD or 20 seconds on SSD so you spent well over the odds for saving 1 minute of time a day for the only boot up you do, so again just depends what you want.

I will only upgrade ram,GPU and a HDD the rest is above me.

Anyway as you said you have time to think things over so see how you feel my opinions are just that, anybody is free to agree or disagree with them ;)

Sweet rig :)
Personally I'll never get another PC without SSD for at least the OS/Swap. I get allergic reactions when I see egg timers though ;)
It's a very cheap (~£50 for a good 32GB SSD) and simple to perform upgrade in the future however.
