Hello all,

I have the above laptop and i dont know how to connect it to my 3D tv to play games in 3D, I connect it via HDMI but are there settings on the laptop i need to change or will it automatically detect that its connect to a 3D tv?

I am looking online for some suggestions but not finding much.

Thanks for any help.

I can't help you directly as I'm having serious problems getting 120Hz on my Vortex 3 with a 7970M.

Do know this tho, that for 3D (or 120Hz ) you need a cable with more bandwidth, as 3D carries a 2x60Hz (or a 120Hz signal if you're gaming at that refresh rate). A regular DVI or HDMI will not be able to carry a 3D signal. On my Vortex 3 I need to buy one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-BizLink-DisplayPort-Adapter-Powered/dp/B003XYBA72/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354238583&sr=8-1
Only my DisplayPort 1.1 can carry a 3D signal. My 3D Monitor only has a Dual-Link DVI (Single-Link DVI can not carry a 3D signal). So that's why I need that adapter from DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI (I haven't tested if it works this way, as I am still waiting for the adapter).

I think that HDMI v1.4 also can carry a 3D signal, but you probably only have a regular HDMI port.

When you have connected your 3D TV with the right cable to the right port on your laptop, unless you need to install some driver for your TV, when you go to Screen Properties>Advanced Settings>Monitor you should be able to change the refresh rate there to 120Hz. For actual 3D where you have glasses etc I have no idea mate.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of all this. I had grand designs of playing games and watching flicks in 3D via a 27" monitor from my laptop. Might seem strange to some that Im doing this and should've bought a desktop but space constraints and portability was a massive factor of my purchase.

Anyway, I honestly didn't think this would be a problem as the GTX 680m description on NVIDIAs website says is capable of 120hz 3D output. But the more I dig around and investigate the less likely it appears that its possible. Whether its a Vortex issue or an Optimus issue I just don't know but conflicting reports are everywhere.

Im not saying I wouldn't have bought the laptop but I would have altered my spec accordingly if I'd have known about this apparent (perhaps) limitation.

With the emergence of 3D, both in gaming and in media playback and peoples desire to experiment, especially those with laptops; surely a clear and concise description of what a gfx card can and cant do should be made aware to everyone when buying one.

This isn't a pop at PCS, I love the laptop and service I've recieved, and will be using them again for sure. I just want to know if my card can output 3D or not before I spend £200+ on a monitor. :)

I feel exactly the same way about the 7970M. How the hell is an average Joe who wants to play 3D games or watch 3 movies going to know about any of this...

well my attempt failed, i took my laptop to a friends house who has a 3D projector. Couldent get it working. I think it was most likely something to do with the HDMI cable. I dont understand why they say the gpu is capable of 3D then dont give any instructions of how to connect what HDMI cable to use because if its like what nipplepie says
I think that HDMI v1.4 also can carry a 3D signal, but you probably only have a regular HDMI port.
then its not possible to out put in 3D.

So im at a dead end with it.

thanks for the replies.

I've had a response from PCS's Paul and the short of it is that due to both Optimus and the configuration within Vortex laptops it is not possible to output 120hz 3D to an external monitor whatever your card.

So even though NVIDIA says it can with my 680m, and many more....it actually can't...there's something not quite right there.

Anyway, I've asked if its possible to add this into the laptop configurator when looking at the card specs. ie. an 'Output to external source in 120hz/3D' heading, then some nice big crosses next to the cards. The '3D Vision' heading, in my opinion, is too vague as the output feature is called 'NVIDIA 3DTV Play'. Then at least people know where they stand. Its too late for me and you guys but it may help someone else out before they make their choice.
