Help needed with new pc build

Hi everyone

I really need some advice on building a new pc. I don't understand a lot of computer jargon so I need it explained to me as simply as possible please. If I'm right then the processor, graphics card and memory all needs to be balanced to avoid bottle neck. I'm not sure how things are as far as the motherboard goes. I will be using my pc for digital editing and as this is a new thing I will be getting involved in I don't know as yet what software or peripherals I will be using. I've looked around a few pc forums and also read several articles and blogs in regard to what photographers say pc specs should be. There seems to be a disagreement here. Most gamers say digital editing doesn't require the same high specs as gaming does and professional photographers say don't cut cost when choosing a processor, the more memory and the better graphics card the faster and smother applications will be, although they do say it will work with less.

The only game I play is The Sims (OK I here you all laughing) but if I come across any games that don't involve war etc. then I'd buy them, so to have that option would be nice. I want to listen to music and possibly later on record and edit music files. Not sure if it makes any difference with the system but I also want to do digital art. Then there are the usual things that are done on a pc including Office, Excel etc.

I do want it to be silent or as quiet as possible as the pc will be in a spare bedroom. It also needs a good cooling system because in the summer that room gets the sun all day (and it will near to the window) and someday it's unbearable in there. It will also be near to a radiator.

Is there any difference between an integrated card reader and one that you can add?

I've only ever had one hard drive, so not really sure what the benefits or reasons are for having two or more. I didn't know hard drives made a noise I thought that was the fans.

Is it the motherboard or the graphics card that dictates what kind of monitor you can have? I've yet to look into monitors that are good for editing.

With regard to wireless, is this if you want to use a pc with a wireless connection or if you have peripherals that can use wireless?

I do want an Intel processor and figure that if I'm paying this amount I may as well go for the new platform so that hopefully it can be upgraded in a few years’ time if needed.

This is the system I like but I'm open to suggestions as I have a feeling that this is overkill. Also, anyway of cutting the cost without making a great difference to performance etc would be great as I wasn't expecting the cost to be so high. It is also the reason why I need to get it right because once the money has been spent that’s it, no more to make changes.

Remember I'm not very knowledgeable so if you think I may have overlooked something that I either need or don't need please tell me. Sorry this post has turned into War & Peace!

Thank you

Sandra

I would downgrade the motherboard to the standard Asus and change the v300 SSD for a different one since it has some performance issues. Are you overclocking your CPU?

Hi, thanks for replying.

Could you briefly explain what the difference is between the two motherboards please? I can't find that one on Asus website.

I wasn't planning to overclock it as I thought it would be able to handle anything. Should I? Do I need to?

Actually you can. There is a specifications tab on the asus website for each motherboard and iirc a "add to comparison" button. The standard motherboard will be fine.

Hi, thanks for replying.

Yeah I did that several days ago. Click Intel Platform, Socket 2011-v3 and Intel X99 chipset. 4 motherboards where shown - X99-A, X99-E WS, Rampage V Extreme and X99 Deluxe. But no worries I will find out :)

Hi guys

Would you please check these specs for me and tell me if it's good to go or are there any other recommendations? I've change a couple of things that were suggested. I've also changed the case, still a silent one but I have some concerns and would appreciate any advice on this. As I said in my original post the room the pc will be in gets extremely hot so it needs a good cooling system. I do want it to run quietly but I'm worried that this type of case won't be suitable. I've also realised the door on it opens the wrong side for me but the benefits of it being quiet will out way a little inconvenience I think.

Also can anyone suggest a decent monitor? Although I understand the benefits of having a matt screen for editing, I'm not sure I would like it when doing other things.

Thank you.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I have a few questions regarding them, so I'd be grateful if you would answer please.

1. If I downgrade the CPU am I not restricting myself for future upgrades as it will only have 28 PCIe lanes compared to 40?

2. Power supply. As I want the pc to run quiet, is it not better to get an ultra quiet one?

3. OS. I'm not keen on getting Windows 8.1 so is it definitely needed?

Already have surge protection :)

I wasn't aware gaming monitors were suitable for editing. I shall go and look into these, thank you. Really appreciate your help.

1. CPU wont restrict you to upgrade anything and it doesnt affect the PCIe lanes, thats the motherboard ;)

2. for a system like this, you usually go for the most trusted PSU, not the most silent ones :) any high end PSU nowadays is gonna be pretty silent

3. if you know how to install your own OS, it's not needed, if you dont know how to but know someone that will do it for you, it's also not needed, if you dont know and dont have someone to do it for you then you clearly need it :)
if the question was if it has to be windows 8, then no, it can be windows 7

4. gaming monitors or whatever other monitor is gonna be good for editing as long as you have a good resolution and are kinda "big" (lets face it, 24" is NOT a small screen) the bigger the screen with the better the resolution the more detail you will see, like that pesky fly that is ruining that beautiful wedding photo

Ok lol I see I should have worded some things differently and I was a little off with the CPU (I'm trying to grasp the technical side but after a while I glaze over) so....

If I go for the CPU that "supports" a maximum of 28 PCIe lanes instead of 40 will that restrict performance and any future upgrades? Is that better? :whistling:

The other answers you gave me I understand so thanks for helping. Much appreciated :)

sorry, didnt see the update

PCIe lanes :) nothing to do with cpu, no even how many can a cpu support, because the PCIe are those nice slots in a motherboard where you connect a GPU or a wifi card

the limiters to upgrade are usually 3 things:
-the motherboard cant support the new harware (ie you havent got enough PCIe lanes to use that shiny new GPU in SLI)
-your PSU doesnt have enough juice to power all your components
-and last but not least is the size of your case, where you put all your components

short story: choose a motherboard that is relatively new and you will be fine with upgrades for a few years at least :)

maybe im explaining myself wrong so please, do ask :)

I'm going on this http://ark.intel.com/compare/82930,82931,82932 (sorry mods if this link isn't allowed) Scroll down to "Max # PCI Express Lanes, then click on it. You probably already know what to do lol.
