hdmi cable

hi guys I have been using a vaga cable to connect my pc to the HD monitor picture ok sound ok I decided to go for a hdmi cable when connected the cable picture ok but no sound has anyone got an idea what the problem could be
I am slowly running out of ideas

You could try going to control panel, hardware and sound, manage audio devices and check that the monitor is the default device.

Give this a try,right click on the speaker icon in the right corner of the taskbar/ select playback devices,right click on your "speaker" device and set as as default /apply.

right click on the sound icon, to the right of your taskbar, choose playback devices, and choose the option of your monitor (it should have an icon of a monitor next to it, just click that and apply

Are you using the monitor speakers?I wouldn't have thought so if using a VGA connection before,in which case you don't want to set HDMI as default,set it to your stand alone speakers,I'm assuming that's what you have.
