Hiya -
I have a 1TB hard drive and only have about 250 GB remaining, despite the fact that i only have around 100GB worth of games and i have been searching for ages trying to find large files but i just cant anywhere. I have downloaded multiple programs to try and find what is taking up the space - but the space taken up isnt 750GB like it should be?? anyone know where the other space is going?

Right click on a drive in Windows Explorer, select properties, and you will see the size of the drive in bytes and GB. The size of the drive is given by the manufacturer as 1 TB but in fact it is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. However 1 KB= 1024 bytes or 1 GB= 1,073,741,824 bytes. This means the actual size of the drive is 1000/ 1.0737 = 931.3 GB.

Depends if the drive has been partitioned, you may have a c:\ drive and a d:\ drive both on the one disk.

Which version of windows are you on?

Windows 7 home premium - how do i tell if they are partitioned? :)

How To Access Disk Management in Windows 7

Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.

Click on the System and Security link.

Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.

In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.

In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.

When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.

After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.

Note: If you don't see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.

There you should see disks numbered as disk0 disk1 etc and then to the right it'll show each partition on that disk.

thanks - says c: drive 930GB
system reserved 100MB
Gigabye D: 4GB

still dont understand why i have space missing. When i click on the :C drive it says there should be 1tb (930GB really) but looking through all the main folders in that drive they only add up to like 100GB - including my games and that. Therefore there is still loads of space missing that i dont know where its gone:(

yeah done that one - says the c: drive is taking up like the 700GB or whatever but the files inside dont add up to that.

Do remember that Windows hides some files by default so you cant't see them, so unless you've made it so you can seen the hidden files they won't add up, however I wouldn't actually expect too much to be hidden so I doubt that's the issue - I realise that doesn't really help in this case but if you end up only being a small-ish amount out that can be the reason.

This is likely to be the source of at least some of your problem. Main offenders are temp folder in app data, a number of caches and the hiberfil.sys, all of which can grow to enormous sizes and remain hidden. You will need to go into folder permissions in control panel to allow these to show then you can see what's taking up space.

Some of these can be cleared up with programs such as cc cleaner, others need some basic terminal commands, easily Googled.

It may also be Windows Restore files. Right click on the drive, select Properties and then select "Previous versions". You may also find drive->Properties->Disk Cleanup useful to remove files you never even knew you had (on my C: drive, I've got 10Gb of "temporary files", 696Mb recycle bin, and 141Mb thumbnails).
