Grid Computing and feeling good.

Not sure if this falls into the website/suggestion area, but seems more of a general topic.

This may go against the idea of not having extra applications installed, but a few years ago, a couple spare desktops were given to the BOINC (SETI) project. While our little band of resources could never compete with teams using super-powerful boxes, the desktops were doing something other than promoting lives as large paper weights. This opt-in application seems an interesting idea because it not only gives advertising basis in competition but also gives hardware something to do and people get to 'feel-good'.

In the spirit of competition, as well as cheap marketing, it could be an easy way to promote PCS as (ahem) something beyond computers.

Just a thought.

What a good idea. I used to run the SETI analysis software on my PC at home many years ago (it must be close on 10 years ago now). For those who leave their PCs on all the time this idea seems like an almost no cost benefit to others.

I used to run these also, certainly less hardware intensive as folding etc, and if I remember you even have it as a screensaver so you could see the radio waves being analysed.
