Graphics Card Issue

I took delivery of my new 3D CAD system last week and to be quite frank I'm not overly impressed. The core system is as follows;

Processor (CPU) AMD FX-8350 Eight Core CPU (4.00GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3+)
Motherboard ASUS® M5A97 R2.0(DDR3, USB3.0, 6Gb/s, Windows 8 Ready!)
Memory (RAM) 16GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (2 X 8GB)
Graphics Card AMD FIREPRO™ V5900 PRO GRAPHICS - 2GB, EYEFINITY, CROSSFIRE PRO

It works okay in AutoCAD and Advance Steel which is my 3D modelling add-on to AutoCAD. The new computer isn't blindingly quick but it is usable! When I exit AutoCAD there is quite a delay while it closes down. I don't get that on my system at work which is a lot lower spec than my new one.

Now, I know ... I didn't buy a games machine but I do like to play a game now and again and my game of choice at the moment is "Sniper Elite V2". My old knackered computer would run that game no problem so I am very disappointed that the new computer just can't run anything close to a game! I can play for about five minutes max and then the computer freezes and locks me out - the same symptoms you might get with a power supply problem! I have tried loads of different setting on the graphics software but you need to be an egghead just to understand half of it! Trial and error with thousands of settings can take a while!

I am considering binning the AMD graphics card and putting in the NVidia card out of my old system - I'm sure it will run my 3D graphics software at least as good as this one (as I said, the performance isn't outstanding as it is!) and I know it will run the odd game here and there when I want it to.

As I said, so far, for the money I paid, I am not enjoying this new computer!

Any ideas?

As far as I'm aware the drivers for professional cards like the Firepro's and Quadros are specifically designed for professional use and have never been very good for games because their drivers are not optimised for gaming at all (though I could be wrong).

Hi Rakk

I know they aren't optimised for gaming but on the AMD web site there are a number of 'help' articles relating to the graphics freezing while playing games. That would imply that AMD would expect you to be able to play games to a certain extent. There is a known issue when you install a product that updates the Mfc80.dll module or the Mfc80u.dll module - this causes the graphics to freeze. But, how would you ever know if that is the problem? Microsoft have a fix that fixes an application that is built with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. It all seems to be getting a bit technical to me :0) All I want to do is play a game now and again :0)
