Gaming/Work Computer

Hi,

Im not really very good when it comes to computer hardware, so was hoping someone could look at the current build I have made and tell me if all parts will be sufficient? Originally I had chosen the bog standard PSU but the website said it would not be powerful enough to run the hardware chosen. Also I chose one of the more bog standard cases however again, the site said it would not be big enough to house the processor cooling. I will be using this system for hopefully 5 years (hopefully..) and will be coding/compiling, running various virtual machines aswell as playing some games (ESO/Defiance/Battlefield 4 etc...).

I'm fairly dead set on that processor and 64GB of ram, the graphics card however is debatable as I'm not too sure how much difference I would see between the GTX 780 vs GTX 780 Ti, would the normal 780 be good enough for future games or is it worth the extra 100ish GBP to for the 780 Ti??

Anyway some opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Below is the current specifications:

^^ Is what I was thinking, however I could also change the GPU to the 780 Ti and change the 1st HDD to a 120GB Kingston V300 SSD and it would work out £10 more expensive than the build above.

My thinking of the build above was to use the 120GB SSD for the Operating System, the 1TB HDD for Program Files/Game Installs and the 4TB HDD for my media collection... Would the 780 Ti offer a VAST increase in performance over the standard 780?

Is 64gb of ram really necessary for your use? I thought 32gb of ram would be well enough for running virtual machines.
Also, get an SSD instead of the dual drive, the dual drive is only necessary when trying to save space, such as in a laptop.

And do you really need the i7 extreme?

Its not really necessary either of them (64GB RAM or 4930k CPU), however I feel if I am going to 1700+ on a PC, I would rather spend the extra 500 on future proofing it. I dont plan on dabbling with overclocking straight away, but it is something I would like the capability of doing in the future though, when I get bored lol...

Upon your advice I have ditched the dual hdd and was looking at the same configuration above with the exception of:

Option 1
HDD 1: 250 GB Samsung EVO SSD
GPU: GTX 780
Total Price: 2, 218

or

Option 2
HDD 1: 120 GB Kingston V300 SSD
GPU: GTX 780 Ti
Total Price: 2, 285

---

Any opinions on which I should go for? Is the difference between the GTX 780 or GTX 780 Ti a big one? Would the GTX 780 be adequate to play Battlefield 4 and future games on? Would the motherboard I have chosen (default) beable to have an extra GPU put in, some time in the future without upgrading the motherboard? This might make my choice a little easier in regards to going with the GTX 780 and should I ever need more, I would beable to add another GTX 780 without having to buy anything besides another 780 GPU??

At 1920x1080 resolution I would stick with the gtx 780. I wouldn't try to future proof by going overboard with the ram and CPU. You can add more ram later on

Thanks for the help keynes. The AOC 29" monitor I was looking at has a resolution of 2560 x 1080 I think, does that mean I should be looking at the 780 Ti? Or will the 780 beable to handle that too. Again the monitor side of things, not too sure on what I am going to go for as im pretty clueless as to whether a gaming console would beable to hook up to these monitors nowdays? If they arent then I guess ill be using it on an LED television in which case I will go with just the 780. Will the motherboard chosen in the configuration above allow me if needed, to add another 780 GTX without having to upgrade the motherboard?

Also 1 more thing,

the only reason I was after an SSD drive was solely for the operating system to sit on and operate a bit faster (booting up etc...) so would it not be a better option for me to go with the Seagate 2TB/8GB SSHD? I see I can request the HDD's to be partitioned in the quote section, so if I went the Seagate route over an SSD, I would probably request Partition 1 to be around 50-100 GB for the OS and the remaining to be partition 2. Would I still see a faster bootup with that drive over a traditional drive?

I would try to get a monitor I personally don't find gaming on a TV ideal. For a 1440p resolution go with the gtx 780 ti. Best performance will be with an SSD as the main drive for the OS and main applications and a caviar black as the secondary drive.

Ok guys,

Thanks for all your help! I have now decided that I will be purchasing either of the following 2 configurations. Would appreciate some help as to which 1 of these two! My mind is telling me 64GB RAM is what I should be looking for, but then I have you guys telling me 32GB will be more than enough for gaming/running upto 4 virtual machines at the same time. I know RAM is easily upgradeable so again, if I need more in the future I can just purchase 4 more pieces of RAM and that should be fine just to plug and play on/in the same motherboard/case, whereas it would be far more expensive to buy a 2nd GTX 780 to go with the other 780... So my brain is telling me I should go for the 2nd configuration below based on the fact RAM will be cheaper than it is now and it will be cheaper in the long run then purchasing another 780 GTX.

Just finding it difficult to choose between the 2, especially as I wont be doing alot of gaming. Mainly using it for coding/virtual machines/transcoding media files/serving media etc...

Will the overclock make alot of noticeable difference? Will it decrease the lifespan of the 4930k CPU? Is it worth doing in general, considering it will mainly be used for coding/running virtual machines and the odd game here and there (BF4/ESO etc...).... I have never had a CPU die on me before, but I have never used an overclocked CPU either so that may be why, lol.. Just really confused as to whether its worth doing or whether I should just keep the CPU standard.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me so far and anyone else who would like to give some advice regarding having PCS overclock it or not.

I wouldn't bother overclocking it, it's already fast enough as it is. Although I think your build is really overkill, you'll never use 64gb of ram or all 6 cores/12 threads of the processor.
A more realistic build would be this which comes to £1734:
Case COOLERMASTER HAF-X FULL TOWER GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4770k (3.5GHz) 8MB Cache Quad core i7 would be fine for your needs. I selected the k version for if you wanted to overclock
