hey guys, I bought an Ethernet cable a few months ago and its been working fine since the day I got it. I woke up this morning to find my router surrounded by water. I disconnected everything and left it all to dry. and found my Ethernet cable leaking water everywhere. so I have had to remove the cable from around the house. I am currently using a personal hotspot from my phone since my pc wont connect to the router via wifi. any idea why it wont connect? other devices work fine so the router is not damaged :L I have a z87 pro mobo that claims to have wifi built in.

please help I need to get at least WiFi setup until I buy a new Ethernet cable. dam life can be cruel sometimes.

Good to see some help there (kudos manta), but in my head we seem to have skipped over the fact that the ethernet cable was leaking water...like, uhm...eh?

I presumed he was in a flood hit/storm damaged area of the UK. Might have been wrong.

I think it was more the fact that ethernet cables are sealed (or at least I thought they were) so how on earth would water be leaking out of it - unless the protective sheath round the outside has soaked up water.

I was thinking maybe it was acting like a string for the water to run down, like who bear grylls collects water from a damp rock into a bottle kind of thing. Might be wrong again, but I'm sure the Op will set us all straight soon.

well the antenna thing did not work, so I have resorted to running an Ethernet cable under doors and down the stairs temporary, so to clear a few things up the water was inside the cable. I presume the cable got split due to the storm and water was entering the cable from outside. still not to happy that the cable managed to split but that's life. time to move on and buy / re route another cable. can anyone recommend a good solid Ethernet cable for OUTDOOR purposes that wont split etc. really don't want a repeat of today. this is my original cable - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NWSQ9M/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - maybe it was not meant for outdoor use?

You sure you have the drivers for it installed and set to be used for networking? Cant think of any other reason it wouldn't work so long as its plugged in (both cables) and in a position it can receive a good signal.

On the topic of the cable, it will have split in the winds probably perished a little with being outside. What you could do (if possible) is run it though some plastic tubing wherever it is outside. If you search for outdoor cat 6 cable you will find a whole bunch of results on ebay and amazon. Bit pricier than normal but it looks like it would last outdoors just fine.
