Freelancer

Ello Folks,

One of the first ever games that I actually played all the way through but kept coming back to time and time again was the Space Sim Freelancer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelancer_(video_game)

I still think the graphics look amazing and the sense of freedom and joy of exploration make this still in my top three games of all time

I have got the Crossfire Mod and was very pleasantly suprised with the depth of it, but i've now exhausted that so was wondering if you guys and gals know of another game out there that is in the same vein (beautiful graphics and freedom to explore without being tied to a linear storyline)

I have tried Eve and that is a stunning production, but the majority of my gaming is spent without access to the internet so would not be able to spend the time I reckon Eve requires to fully get into.

Any ideas for something I could try?

Fallout 3? I've modified its rear end off and it plays beautifully. Its got a storyline but with so many side missions and the massive map, there's plenty to go at. :)

System requirements
600 MHz CPU
128 MB RAM
900 MB hard disk space
16 MB video card

You kids and your fancy pants machines.

Fallout is a great shout - unparalelled open world game play. Funny with some dark themes to keep you grounded.

Cheers folks, it was a space based game I am looking for (I've have played Fallout 3 though and it does indeed rock )

I've googled the X Series games and they do look like they are right up my street although they are not appearing in the Steam Store. Will have a rake around elsewhere and get a copy of the latest

X3: Reunion seems to be available on Steam now. I haven't bought it but it's listed. My disk copy of X2: The Threat doesn't install under Windows 7.

I have high hopes for Star Citizen but that's not published yet and it might have quite high minimum system requirements when it is.

Thanks Yrubdarb. I've found "X Superbox" with all of 'em bundled for £20 on Gamesplanet

Think there is a new one "X Rebirth" coming out early 2013 with totally reworked graphics and mechanics and haven't seen that Star Citizen mentioned, I'll take a look when it surfaces

Just checked out Star Citizen and it is being made by the same fella who made Freelancer in the first place so if that doesn't fit the bill I don't know what will!

Note that Star Citizen won't be out till 2014. If you are interested in the X series of games you should perhaps go for X3: Terran Conflict + Albion Prelude as (AP needs TC to run) as AP is the newest game out. Generally the predecessors are only neccessary if you want storyline/lore info.

As for Rebirth, I think it may be getting pushed back given they've not released much info about it.

I found the X3 Bundle on Steam and have just started TC. Very impressed so far, just what I was after so thanks very much all for your inputs.

Shame about Star Citizen being a year plus away but very happy with X3 for the time being :alien:
