My order, I hope, will soon move into the build stage. A quiet PC is my main priority and therefore can anyone provide comments on which case is best between FRACTAL DESIGN R3 and Coolermaster sileo 500 in particular build quality, features e.g.cable mamagement, quiet, cooling etc.

Thanks,

Daryl

The Fractal Design Define R3 is the better case for everything really but it's more expensive so it depends what your budget is.

Thanks Phoenix - budget is not an issue; I just want to buy the best available for being quiet and quality. I also read that the fractual is good for cable management and I assume that the pc builder will arrange cables as neat as possible (hidden behind motherboard where possible)? I assume also as I am in pre-production that I can change the case?

Daryl

Thanks for prompt reply - much appreciated. I will make final decision before monday morning as it is likely that the build stage is immenent (been in pre production for 10 days). PCS are not likey to change status from pre-production to build over the weekend i.e. i have time to make final decision before monday morning?

No it's unlikely that it will change over the weekend but make sure that you make a decision early monday morning.

From a cable management point of view, the Fractal is the better case as Phoenix suggests.

We try and use all the features of each case as they were intended, cable management etc.

If you do send in the Fractal case, please do pm me the order number as i would be curious to see the machine.

Hi Gorman - I'll appreciate if you could let me know Monday if they are in stock. Unlikley to stick with it if it isnt as I have already been in pre-production for 10 days.

Thanks, Daryl

Pre-production is the longest stage of all.

Its better to have the case you want for years than settle for one to save a few days.

Pm me a reminder and i will check the stock for you no problem.

il be going to have a sneaky peaky though.

I'll be interested in your views once you've had a look.

When I spec'ed my PC, the Coolermaster Sileo 500 was the only case on offer that specifically mentioned 'Quiet'. The R3 has been added later. My PC is a long way behind Daryl's in the queue, so with luck, I've time to change my mind after you report back.

It's not an entirely straightforward decision. The R3 should certainly be better quality - the extra 20 quid must be spent somewhere. It is a slightly unusual configuration though. It only has one 5.25" bay, which is arguably one less than is ideal. It has 8 3.5" HDD bays, which is way more than I will need.

In actual fact, you can have a 2nd 5.25" drive, but you lose the card reader. The 2nd bay can be configured as either 5.25" or 3.5" & it's were the card reader sits.

It also has a front door, which makes it look nice & should help keep it quiet, but means that you have to open it to use both the optical drive & the card reader. It also opens the wrong way for where it will sit in relation to my desk.

The Sileo 500 isn't perfect either. It has 5 x 5.25 external bays, which probably means at least 3 doing nothing. It claims to have 4 x 3.5" HHD bays, but I have my doubts. It's only supplied with rails for 3 disks & certainly the pictures look as if it's 3 internal disks, plus a card reader slot, plus a slot holding the front USB & speaker ports. I suspect you can have a 4th disk or a card reader, but not both, although the configurator lets you specify 4+1.

Has anyone actually got 4 disks in a Sileo 500?

I've just tried to spec the R3 with 2 x 5.25" optical drives & a card reader & it's let me. That should present an interesting challenge to whoever has to build it.

Thanks for pointing this out - an exception has now been added allowing a total of two devices from 1st ODD, 2nd ODD and card reader. +rep :)
