Flicker and Yellow Hue on screen- Optimus IV 15.6 Inch- Just 1.5 Years old :(

Hello Pc Specialist.

I hope you can assist me as Im not very happy about this problem creeping up shortly after the 1 Year warranty period. This is the second problem Im having with this laptop, the other being a faulty Hard Drive which was replaced within warranty but I still had to pay for the delivery. My old laptop lasted me 5 years without any issues, so its very annoying that a highend laptop is starting to show signs after 1 year.

Anyway, now its a yellow hue/flickering sceen problem. At a certain angle, when the lid is opened to around 85-95 degrees from the keyboard, the screen experiences a yellow hue on the white colours. This is fixed by opening the lid wider than 95 degrees or closing it slightly under 85 degrees. At 90 degrees, it can temporarily be fixed by adjusting and holding the screen tightly but as soon as I let go, the annoying yellow hue is back. In addition to this hue, there is also a perfectly vertical yellow line, of the same colour as the hue.

I suspect a loose or worn cable but I dont see where it could be loose. Can you please assist. Surely this laptop should last more than 1 year of normal use.

I await your response

If anything, please provide the make and model of the LCD so I can enquire further about possible replacement. Its a Full HD LCD non-matte screen. It was the standard option for the Optimus IV when I ordered it back in October 2012.

Since you have customised components I would have assume a high end laptop is more prone for issues than a standard one. Can you contact PCS to diagnose the problem? I am assuming you got standard warranty, you should still get labour cost covered.

Hello Unre4l,

Sorry to hear your having problems.

Can you take a picture of this at all?

I tend to find that with my laptop the colors do change slightly depending on the angle you are viewing at whites particularly. For example, when Windows with white back grounds are open on the laptop if i move up or down i sometimes get a blue tinge on the screen however these monitors are designed to be viewed at a direct angle to your line of sight. That may explain the yellow ting you are getting depending on how severe it is.

It doesn't explain the yellow line of pixels you are getting however, unfortunately screens do go faulty, this can happen on any machine with a screen televisions etc from day one up to years old.

To get an official response from PCS you would be best to contact them on one of the following points of contact. These forums are mainly community based however we will do our best to support.

Telephone 0844 499 4000
or open up a support ticket from your account page.

Hope this helps,

Mike

I rather sounds like it might be wear on the cable connecting the screen to the motherboard. Do you open and close the lid often?

I have an Optimus IV and if you turn it upside down and remove the large back plate the screen cable and connector are between the second hard drive and the very edge of the case. It might be worth popping the connector off and pushing it back ensuring that it's firmly home. I would also try moving the cable with the laptop on to see whether you can induce the display problems you mention.

Hello guys. Thanks for all the replies

@SmokeDarKnight
I know what you mean by the colour change at different angle, but this is very different. There is a noticeable and sudden change of colour where all the whites turn into a light yellow.

@ubuysa
I will try this. At least I now know where the cable is connected.

Just some general feedback, I dont pop the lid open all too often. It normally remains in that position on my desk. But the cable must be very fragile or brushing up against something sharp if it wears out in a year. I understand these things can happen but in my experience, laptops last around 3 years before bits and pieces burn out. I just didnt expect my old ACER to be of better build quality.
