Feels like I'm missing something?

Hey, so this is my first "build" for a PC, I usually buy pre built ones, but was advised to build my own. I am very new to this and it is most definitely not my strong point as you might be able to tell. I feel like I may have missed something or something could do with a change. Any help is massively appreciated.

I plan to use the PC for gaming on GTA, Euro Truck, possibly flight simulator, etc.

Thank you for your time, have a great day!

Firstly, what‘s your max budget, and what monitor is is being used with (make & model, or resolution & frequency)?

Secondly, an FYI, but MSFS is one of the greediest ‘games’ out there and will need a beefy CPU/GPU combo if your expecting 60FPS with everything at max.

Thirdly, Intel is pointless. Their fast chips are failing, and their newer ones have been hamstrung so they don’t fail. Everyone on here would suggest an AMD build at the moment.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Was hoping to draw the line at around £1,700 but I feel like I may be heading into the lower end of 2k.

I wasn't aware of that, I appreciate the heads up and I shall get that changed. Are there any you would recommend?

My monitor is due an upgrade because it's an old LG DV3 TV/Monitor.

A decent 1080p build is coming in at around £1700 currently; a 1440p one about £2100; a 4K one around £2600 - mainly due to the step up in GPU prices at each resolution.

New Nvidia GPUs have just come out (available end-Jan / early Feb depending on model), so they may be a worthwhile buy...or may make the previous gen cheaper if that's the choice...although there's nothing announced below 12gb 5070 at the moment (only 12gb 5070 @ £539, 16gb 5070Ti @ £729, 16gb 5080 @ £979, 32gb 5090 @ £1939).

That's not bad at all. I was expecting more than that in all honesty.

Sorry for my hundreds of questions. Is it potentially worth picking out a pre built PC designed for MSFS and switch out the CPU

That would be a no, the reason being that pre builds are built down to a price, so they might have let's say a fairly good CPU (to attract folk) but the rest of the build is only just good enough to support that cpu, so things like the PSU, motherboard etc don't allow for any future upgrades

NO!

Pre-builts tend to have headline-grabbing CPUs and GPUs, and are then very vague on what exactly the other components are.

For example (and this is all pre-built manufacturers, not just PCS):
  • they'll advertise a 1TB SSD, and you'll assume it's a branded fast m.2 NVMe one, but it could easily be a slow SATA or slow NVMe one. Plus it'll usually be a single 1TB drive which would be used for everything...and thus risk losing everything if there's an issue;
  • they'll advertise a case with lots of RGB, but won't tell you the make & model, so you won't know if the airflow/build quality is decent, or the RGB control software is flaky.
  • they won't tell you the make/model of the PSU, and it will usually be the bare minimum to cover the advertised max power of the CPU/GPU - when we know these can easily spike to 2x their advertised power draw
  • they won't tell you the make/model of the cooler, so it could be a £10 or £100 one (usually the former) and will 1) not cool effectively, 2) be noisier, as it it has to work harder, 3) break sooner - and hopefully doesn't kill your CPU at the same time (warranty would just replace like for like and you'd be in the same situation).
Some won't be like that, but it's very rare for the complete spec and all the details to be shown for pre-builts for you to make an informed decision. A custom-build allows you to specify each & every item to your requirements, and know if you've left room for upgrades in 3/5/7/9 years time.

I really appreciate all the advice, thank you so much. Asides from the intel CPUs, would there be anything else to try and avoid/recommend having on.

Once we know what monitor you're planning on, and what your max budget is, we can offer more advice...as everything is inter-linked.

So a more powerful CPU would need a better cooler; or bigger GPU might need a bigger case and more powerful PSU; lots of modern games require an SSD to run from rather than a HDD; etc.

Gone for a cheaper monitor (MSI 27" Pro MP275) not sure if I've done the right thing. I am happy to put a bit more towards a monitor if needs be (max £200). Preferably I'd be happy to keep it at £1,700 but whether that is enough for what I want is another thing so I'm happy to go up a little if needs be.

That’s a 1080p business monitor, not a gaming monitor…

Hi,

After my previous post and having no idea, truthfully, I still don't have a clue. I did take on the advice, sought further advice and did a bit of research, I'm not sure if I've made any progress or gone back down the same road.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

For a 1080p build you're considerably over-speccing the GPU, and the savings from that would help elsewhere.

I've asked for this post to be merged with your original one, and we can build something from the configurator there...
