Extreme laptop gaming

Afternoon gents,

Just read this lil' tit bit:

Instead of competing in the overcrowded ultrabook market, Taiwan-based MSI hopes to differentiate its brand with more gaming laptops. Its latest flagship offering in this segment is the GT70 Dragon Edition 2 Extreme, a large, 17.3-inch notebook packing some pretty powerful hardware under the hood.

At the heart of this machine is an Intel Core i7 (Haswell) processor, which is overclocked up to 4.1GHz by the company. The chip is specially "binned" so that it can run at the faster clock speed without requiring more voltage to maintain stability, while a proprietary Cooler Boost 2 technology keeps the system cool.

If the likes of MSI are now starting to factory overclock mobile CPUs just wondering if PCS would consider it? Food for thought anyway!

Kind regards

Anton.

MSI make their own chassis' so they're better able to support things like proprietary cooling technology; PCS have to make do with generic chassis' like those made by Clevo, so they'd either be depending on Clevo to develop a chassis designed for overclocking, or happen to find a chassis that already has enough space inside and is of the right materials by happenstance... which is unlikely. PCS also has to depend on the BIOS's OEM to build in such features to their BIOS, or hack it in themselves which is actually surprisingly easy but can have legal or stability issues.
Plus, the binning process probably lends itself better to the (presumably) much higher turnaround a company like MSI has compared to PCS. And the stability issues would increase support costs for PCS which is also awkward for smaller companies.
