DVD encoder missing

Hello there

I have a PCS 64bit machine running Windows 7.

I can no longer play video DVDs (I could previously) and when I run the windows media player troubleshooter it informs me that I co not have a DVD video encoder.

I am assuming one of my codecs has gone missing?

Would it be sensible to restore my PC to an earlier point or is there an easier way of fixing this.

Hoping someone can offer assistance

all the best

Mick

Thank you for your speedy reply.

I bought the PC from PCS so I probably did - unfortunately I am at work now so cannot check - I guess i should have waited until tonight to ask the question!

You could try reinstalling the DVD player or use something different like VLC media player.

It won't play Blu ray 3D movies so I was forced to buy Corel WinDVD Pro :(

Yeah I find blu-rays really sucky for PC. What's the point in having a Blu-ray drive that requires buying expensive software to play the disc?! That's like buying a DVD drive and having to pay £50 for the software to run it. It's just a big money making spinner like most things these days.

To be fair the Blu ray drive that came with my PC came with a DVD/Blu ray media player. It will play anything apart from Blu ray 3D movies.

What was it? I got Power DVD software with mine, but I think you still have to pay for it? It's just installation software?

The Standard Cd comes with DVD and Blu Ray playback, however if you want to mount a virtual drive or read/write discs you will need to upgrade your software to the full retail pack. I had to purchase Nero 12.

Sadly is the case, we provide a basic version of Nero and PowerDVD with most systems, this should allow you to playback DVD's and write CD's/DVD's.

The free version of Nero supports burning, and that's pretty much it.

The free version of PowerDVD supports DVD Playback (required on Windows 8, as it does not have built in decoders like Windows 7), BluRay playback (required for any OS) and that's pretty much it.

To get 3D-Bluray you need the premium versions of the software which are sadly too expensive to bundle in with the system. I had to do the same with my old 3D telly.

Thanks to everyone for their help - I tried downloading VLC but that wouldn't work either - then thought of updating my graphics driver and that seems to have done the trick
